TranscriptHardrocker netters split matches at USFtournament By Brad Blume Sports Information Director South Dakota School of Mines SIOUX FALLS ‐‐‐‐ The South Dakota School of Mines women's volleyball team was back in action this past weekend, traveling to Sioux Falls, S.D., to compete in the University of Sioux Falls Volleyball Tournament Friday and Saturday. The Hardrockers split on the weekend, earning victories over Briar Cliff College and Dana College on Friday before coming up short to the University of Sioux Falls and Mount Marty College on Saturday. While Hardrocker head coach Beth Honaker was excited for the pair of wins in the Friday matches, she was equally disappointed in Mines output in Saturday's billing. According to Honaker, Friday's opponents were much tougher then the two teams the Hardrockers played Saturday. "The girls learned a lesson not to take anyone for granted, " Honaker said. The ‘Rocker netters defeated Briar Cliff 25‐19, 23‐25, 25‐22, 14‐25, 15‐9 and then took out Dana, 25‐17, 25‐19, 2426, 25‐20. SDM struggled on Day 2, falling to USF in three sets, 15‐25, 21‐25, 23‐25 and did the same to MMC, 24‐26, 21‐25, 23‐25. "We were very anxious to play those first matches and we played well, " Honaker said. "(On Saturday) we made a lot of mental mistakes and a lot of our girls were just going through the motions. All year long we've talked about our defense and how great it is ‐‐‐ but on Saturday, that's what was lacking." With the weekend over the Hardrockers remain at.500 on the season with a 4‐4 record. Individually, senior libero Jenny Hiykel had a good tournament, collecting 92 digs in the four matches showing awesome defense, while on the offensive side of the ball, senior Ashley Kauffman (Interdisiplinary Science major from Fort Morgan, Colo.) tallied 40 kills for the tournament, junior Katherine Hanson (Mechanical Engineering major from Sioux Falls, S.D.) posted 39 kills and freshman Madi Lane (Chemical Engineering major from Fort Collins, Colo.) collected 36. The Hardrockers are back on the road this weekend, heading to Iowa for the Graceland University Volleyball Tournament Friday and Saturday. The schedule and who the ‘Rockers play has yet to be determined. "We are going back to the basics in practice this week, " Honaker said
