TranscriptBy Brad Blume Sports Information Director South Dakota School of Mines RAPID CITY ‐‐‐‐ The South Dakota School of Mines football team kicked off the 2008 season in a big way, hanging a 62‐7 defeat over the Haskell Indian Nations University Fightin' Indians Saturday night at O'Harra Stadium in Rapid City. Led by offensive weapons Nick Russell (quarterback from San Diego, Calif.) and Jamie Dale (running back from Alpine, Calif.) along with a special teams that returned two punts and a kickoff back for scores, the Hardrockers posted their second highest scoring output in team history, falling 15 points shy of the record. Russell shined in his debut, throwing four touchdown passes, completing 15 of 28 passes for 248 yards with no interceptions. The Hardrockers had a nice mix of moving the ball on the ground and in the air. SDM racked up 159 yards on the grounds, led by Dale, who tallied 104 in his first college game. He also found the end zone three times. The first score came on a 43‐yard scamper in the second quarter, his next TD was in the third quarter, rushing in from 12 yards out. Dale's third score came at the end of the third when he returned a punt 69 yards for the final touchdown of the night. Sophomore defensive back Dustin Meneley also posted two scores, returning the opening kickoff of the second half 86 yards back for a touchdown and then later in the period returned a punt for 51 yards for six points. If that weren't enough, junior tight end Jason Bielstein (Lodi, Calif.) found his way to the end zones twice in the game as well. He caught TD receptions of two and 20 yards to help aid the team. Freshman Tyler Barth (Dickinson, N.D.) and Tony Ostheimer (sophomore from Ranchester, Wyo.) were credited with the other two scores. Barth caught a 33‐yard reception for six points and Ostheimer hauled in a long bomb and raced to the end zone for a 79‐yard reception good for a TD. SDM kicker and Rapid City's own Justin Whalin got quite a workout Saturday kicking PAT's. He delivered, making 8 of 9 attempted. The ‘Rockers racked up 412 yards of offense while the defense held Haskell to 263. South Dakota School of Mines now has a week off and will next see action Sept. 13 in North Dakota at Trinity Bible College. The game is slated for a 1 p.m. start and is a non‐conference bout.
