| Transcript | Lady ‘Rockers add new assistant hoops coach By Brad Blume Sports Information Director South Dakota School of Mines RAPID CITY ‐‐‐ South Dakota School of Mines women's basketball head coach Barb Felderman is pleased to announce that Rachel Janzen has been added to the coaching staff for the 2008‐09 season. Janzen is no stranger to NAIA women's basketball, playing four years herself for the Southern Nazarene University in Bethany, Okla. Janzen graduated in December of 2007 with a degree in Kinesiology along with a minor in coaching and received the graduating honor of Magna Cum Laude. "Rachel comes to us from a proven NAIA university, " Felderman said. "She knows what it takes to be successful." After graduating, Janzen became an assistant varsity hoops coach and head junior varsity coach at Western Heights High School in Oklahoma City, Okla., for one season. She's also furthered her coaching skills interning for Southern Nazarene University athletic department, assisting the athletics director, marketing camps and coaching teams. ��I am very competitive, " Janzen said. "I have lived my basketball career – and still today ‐‐‐ with the motto ‘you always miss 100 percent of the shots you don't take.' Coaching has always been my passion and I look forward to the challenges ahead of me at SDSM&T." As an assistant coach, Janzen will focus a lot of her efforts on recruitment. "With her knowledge and enthusiasm we know she will be a great addition to Lady Hardrocker basketball, " Felderman added. Lady Hardrockers add standout hoopster to 2008‐09 squad RAPID CITY ‐‐‐ The South Dakota School of Mines women��s basketball program along with head coach Barb Felderman are pleased to welcome Maria Luze as the newest member of the Lady Hardrocker hoops team. Luze is a 5‐foot��8‐inch guard from Brookings, S.D., who is multi‐sport athlete. She is a four‐time letter winner in basketball and track as well and five‐time letterwinner in cross country. Playing for the Brookings Bobcats, Luze earned the Outstanding Senior Athlete Award, was selected at Most Inspirational in track, was a co‐captain for basketball as a senior and most recently was on the South Dakota All Star Basketball (south team). She also shines off the court earning an Honor Merit Scholar award, is an Honor Scholar Student selection and was Academic All‐State from 2004‐2008 in basketball track and cross country. "Maria has the desire to get better and better. She moved up to class AA Brooking in high school to play at the tougher competition, " Felderman said. "Maria has developed into an excellent shooter ‐‐‐ something any team can use. We look forward to coaching this positive young lady." While attending South Dakota School of Mines Luze plans to pursue a degree in Chemical Engineering. SDM volleyball team splits matches at first tourney of the season The South Dakota School of Mines women's volleyball team kicked off the 2008 season this past weekend, competing in the Dakota Athletic / Frontier Conference Crossover Tournament in Dickinson, N.D. The Lady Hardrockers split four games, defeating University of Montana‐Western and Montana State –Northern Friday, before falling to Montana Tech and Carroll College on Saturday. The Rockers won over UM‐Western, 25‐20, 26‐24, 15‐25, 25��20 and then topped MSU‐Norther, 25‐15, 21‐25, 25‐19, 25‐19. SDM then went up a very good Montana Tech Unit, where the ‘Rockers were defeated in three sets, 13‐25, 12‐25, 23‐25. In their final match of the weekend, SD Mines' rally fell short to Carroll College, 15‐25, 13‐25, 25‐20, 24‐26. "We struggled with our setting this weekend, " said Hardrocker head volleyball coach Beth Honaker. "But everyday we are getting better. "When our setters get more comfortable we will have more options. We set mostly on the outside because it's the easiest for us to set." For the weekend, the Lady Hardrockers went 357‐447 on the attack and recorded 135 kills. They also had 19 aces over the four matches, 120 assists, 290 digs and 50 total blocks. Individaully, Honaker was impressed with her senior outside hitter Ashley Kauffman (Fort Morgan, Colo.). Kauffman, a team captain, was 108‐134 on the attack in the tournament and was the team's leading kill getter, posting 45. "Ashley Kauffman stepped up and was a leader on the court this weekend, " Honaker said. Senior libero Jenny Hiykel (Omaha, Neb.) also put up good numbers out of the back row, coming up with 99 digs for the tournament. Next up the Hardrockers travel to Sioux Falls, S.D., for the University of Sioux Falls Tournament, Sept. 5‐6. |
