TranscriptBy Brad Blume Sports Information Director South Dakota School of Mines DICKINSON ‐‐‐ The South Dakota School of Mines women's volleyball team started the 2008 campaign off on the right foot earning a victory in their first match, 3‐1, over the University of Montana‐Western at the Dakota Athletic Conference/ Frontier Conference Crossover Tournament in Dickinson, N.D. on Friday. The Hardrockers defeated the Lady Bulldogs, 25‐20, 26‐24, 15‐25, 25‐20 to earn the 1‐0 mark for the season. As a team the Hardrockers posted 30 kills in the match, led by junior Katherine Hanson (Sioux Falls, S.D.), who record eight on the day and was 15‐19 on the attack. Senior Ashley Kauffman (Fort Morgan, Colo.) had seven kills and was 21‐25 on the attack while newcomer Madi Lane (freshman from Windsor Colo.) was 22‐25 with six kills. SD Mines defense again seems to dictate the action as the team came up with 69 digs, spearheaded by senior libero Jenny Hiykel (Omaha, Neb.) who tallied 18 while Hanson was close behind with 12. The Hardrockers also came through at the net with 17 total blocks. Kauffman paced the team marking up one solo block and three assisted. SD Mines has another match today at 4 p.m., squaring off with Montana State‐Northern.
