| Transcript | By Brad Blume Sports Information Director South Dakota School of Mines Football RAPID CITY ‐‐‐ The South Dakota School of Mines football team continues to reap the benefits of a successful season earning 12 spots on the 2008 Dakota Athletic Conference All‐Conference Teams. The Hardrockers had four players earn DAC first team honors, four players earn DAC second team honors and five players named to the DAC Honorable Mention list. Members of the SD Mines football team that made the DAC first team are: freshman running back Jamie Dale, senior linebacker Tyrell Anderson, sophomore defensive back Tom Lunzman and special team ace sophomore Dustin Meneley. Dale had a big season for the Hardrockers and capped it off with a DAC First Team Offense selection. The San Diego, Calif., native scored 14 total touchdowns and broke the school season scoring record with 88 points. He tallied 1, 408 all purpose yards this year and averaged 156.4 each game. Anderson, a Green River, Wyo., native, made the All Conference list for the second consecutive year. He was the team's second leading tackler with 74 – 9.5 were for a loss. He also had one sack and broke up three passes. Lunzman picked up where he left off last year. The Gretna, Neb., native led the team with 84 tackles ‐‐‐ 6.5 were for a loss of yardage. He also had a team high six interceptions returned for 111 yards as well as two fumble recoveries and one forced fumble to go along with four pass breakups. Lunzman was named to the DAC First Team At Large. Meneley not only made the DAC First Team Special Team, but was also named to the DAC Honorable Mention List as a defensive back. As a kickoff returner, the Naples, Fla., native posted 497 yards on 19 returns. He averaged 26.2 yards a return and scored one touchdown. On punt return he returned 20 punts for 343 yards. He averaged 17.1 yards per punt return and scored one touchdown this season. As a defensive back, Meneley recorded44 tackles, had three interceptions and broke up five passes. Beilstein did very well this season making the transition to tight end. The Lodi, Calif., native had 46 receptions and tallied 508 yards on the season and scored five touchdowns. He averaged 50.8 yards a game. Westendorf ended the year with 67 tackles, two interceptions, broke up eight passes, recovered three fumbles and forced one fumble while fellow senior Clark had 61 tackles – five for a loss and half a sack and one pass breakup. Volleyball RAPID CITY ‐‐‐ After two seasons as head coach of the South Dakota School of Mines women's volleyball program, Beth Honaker has resigned her position. "I'm moving to Seattle, Wash., to join my fiancé Jake Donnelly, " Honaker said. "He is an electrical engineer at the Puget Sound Naval Ship Yard there." Honaker has been with the Hardrockers for three seasons, spending one year as an assistant coach before being promoted in 2007, taking control of the program from Doug Tabbert. ��Coach Honaker came in as an assistant for one year and was a positive addition to the program for that year, " said Hardrocker Athletics Director Hugh Welsh. "When coach Tabbert resigned and went to Nebraska‐Kearney, Beth was our obvious choice for our next head coach." During her first season as head coach, the Hardrockers had a phenomenal year, finishing with a 23‐6 record and making an appearance in the Dakota Athletic Tournament Title match as well as finishing third in the 2007 regular season rankings. "She stepped in and led us to one of our finest season in recent history. This past year was a little more of a challenge because of attrition, but coach Honaker still did a good job, " Welsh added. SD Mines finished seventh this past year and their season ended in the DAC quarterfinals at the hands of the Black Hills State Yellow Jackets. "I've had the opportunity to work with many talented individuals over the last three seasons, " Honaker said. Honaker has achieved some impressive things during her brief stint as a Hardrocker. Since joining the program in 2006, the Hardrockers have made three‐straight appearances in the post season tournament, defeated Black Hills State for the first time in 12 attempts (2007); earned their first DAC victory over Dickinson State (2008) ‐‐‐ it was also the first win over the Blue Hawks in more than 12 years. Originally from Walkerton, Ind., Honaker came to South Dakota School of Mines from Northern Michigan University where she earned a BS degree in Physical and Health Education in 2004 and also a MS degree in Exercise Science in 2006. "I want to thank Hugh Welsh for giving me the opportunity to coach one of the better volleyball team that the South Dakota School of Mines has seen in quite some time, " Honaker said. "Hugh took a chance on a young female coach with little experience. I appreciate all that he and the rest of the administration have done to help me better my career." Honaker finished with a 35‐22 overall record while coaching at SD Mines. She was also an assistant track coach for the Hardrockers. Honaker's main duties were to help the hurdlers and sprinters. Under her tutelage, Honaker has coached two NAIA track All‐Americans and one NAIA track National Champion. "The entire department will miss Beth. She was a real team player and easy person to deal with, and a very good coach, " Welsh said. "Beth also was a real positive addition to our track and field coaching staff. I want to wish Beth the best of luck on her future endeavors." The South Dakota School of Mines athletics department will begin to look for Honaker's replacement. "The position will be advertised within the next week and we will conduct a national search for our next head volleyball coach, " Welsh said. All Conference Teams Announced RAPID CITY ‐‐‐ The Dakota Athletic Conference released the All Conference teams Monday and the Hardrockers had three names on the list. Senior Jenny Hiykel (Omaha, Neb.) earned first team honors for the second consecutive year and also was named DAC Libero of the Year for the second straight season. On top of that Hiykel also received the honor of being the DAC Most Valuable Senior. "For the past four years the defense has been built around Jenny, " coach Honaker said. "She is very deserving of all these honors. As a libero on the season, Hiykel led the Hardrockers in digs with 683 for the year. In 103 games played she also had 518 receptions. She holds several school records including most digs in a season with 717. Her 2008 total also puts her in second place. "I thought it was going to be a fight between Hiykel and Dakota State's libero (Laura Lanoue), but Hiykel earned the award almost unanimously." Earning second team honors are outside hitter Ashley Kauffman (senior from Fort Morgan, Colo.) and Katherine Hanson (junior from Sioux Falls, S.D.). "I was a little disappointed that Ashley wasn't higher on the list, " Honaker said. "She just as easily could have been on the first team." Kauffman is also a repeat All Conference selection. She led the team in kills this season with 313 and made good on 768 of 954 attacks. She was also second in the conference in kills averaging 3.04 kills a game and sixth in the DAC in digs with 429 averaging 4.2 a game. "It's nice to get recognized for all my hard work, " Kauffman said about earning the DAC honor. "It's just disappointing that we didn't have a better season. But it was still a fun year and a competitive one as well." Hanson, a middle hitter, was named to the second team as well this year. She finished the year with240 kills and was 598‐702 on the attack. She also posted 74 total blocks for the year (16 solo, 58 assisted). "This is the second year she has been nominated and I am very glad to see she finally got on the (DAC) list, " Honaker added. Men's Basketball RAPID CITY ‐‐‐ The South Dakota School of Mines men's basketball played a pair of competitive games this past weekend in which the Hardrockers split in their home opener at Goodell Gymnasium in Rapid City, S.D. On Thursday evening the Hardrockers took on the very good and undefeated Rocky Mountain College Battling Bears from Billings, Mont., where the Bears escaped with a 77‐74 win. SD Mines opened the season against the Bears two weeks earlier in Montana where they were handed an 86‐68 defeat. This time around the Hardrockers were much improved and if not for some key rebounds down the stretch, could have delivered Rocky Mountain its first loss. The Bears held a 45‐35 advantage at the half, but SDM outscored the Bears, 39‐36, over the final 20 minutes. A slow start for the home team may have played a factor. Individually, junior Robbie Fedor (Monticello, Minn., and sophomore Kaleb Rehmer (Gillette, Wyo.) paced the Hardrockers each posting 13 points while senior Brandon Smith (Amenia, N.D.). "We need to get better at rebounding and we need to be more consistent at the start of our game, " said Hardrocker head men's basketball coach Jason Henry. The Hardrockers faced Montana Tech Sunday afternoon and after spotting the Orediggers 14 points at the beginning of the first half, rallied back to take a one‐point edge at halftime, 32‐31. SD Mines rolled in the second half, putting up 58 points to Montana Tech's 38 to win the non‐conference bout, 84‐69. Once the ‘Rockers got rolling, it was hard to stop them. They were able to cause some turnovers, 28 total, and made some transition buckets to help win the game. Three Hardrockers scored in double figures. Fedor led the way with an impressive 28‐point performance, while sophomore AJ Trennepohl (Lubbock, Texas) added 14 markers and junior Carl Johnson (Rapid City) put up 11. "I am pretty happy with our overall effort this weekend, " Henry said. "Our defensive effort was really good for the most part as well." The ‘Rockers are now 3‐3 on the season and head to Nebraska to face Dana College on Friday and then head to Sioux Falls for an exhibition game with Augustana College. Women's Basketball RAPID CITY ‐‐‐ The South Dakota School of Mines women's basketball team played host the Howard Johnson / Lady Hardrocker Women's Basketball Classic at Goodell Gymnasium in Rapid City. The SD Mines women took on the Rocky Mountain College Battling Bears and ended with an impressive 59‐53 win. The Hardrockers held the lead for the whole game earning a 28‐23 lead in the first half and then bettering the Bears in the second period 31‐30. Individually, junior Bethany Holyoak (Moorcroft, Wyo.) had an outstanding performance with her third double‐double of the season. She scored 23 points and collected 13 rebounds and recorded four blocks while freshman Ariel Granillo (Chandler, Ariz.) put up 14 markers. The Lady Hardrockers didn't fare so well in Saturday's bout against Doane College. The Lady Tigers took advantage of SD Mines youth, putting full‐court pressure from the opening buzzer. The Hardrockers weren't able to handle the pressure and ended with tough loss to the Visitors, 77‐58. Holyoak and Jerika Ihnen (sophomore from Tea, S.D.) paced the Hardrockers, each scoring 13 points. With the split, the Hardrockers now have a 3‐3 record on the season and next head to Billings, Mont., for the Rocky Mountain Women's Basketball Classic. SD Mines takes on Carroll College Friday in a 6 p.m. contest and then has a rematch with the Bears Saturday at 8 p.m. |
