The win gave SD Mines a.500 record at 5‐5 and improved the team's Dakota Athletic Conference record to 3‐4. The last time the Hardrockers had a.500 season was back in 1995. The Hardrockers got another outstanding performance from freshman running back Jamie Dale (Alpine, Calif.) who was a question mark coming into the game after injuring his knee two weeks prior. The speedy runner rattled of 148 rushing yards and scored two touchdowns on 29 attempts to aid his team. Dale also caught 38 passes for 38 yards including a long of 17 which set up the game‐winning score late in the fourth quarter. With his two scores Dale broke the school's season scoring record tallying 90 points for the year (13 TDs). SD Mines quarterback Nick Russell (freshman from San Diego, Calif.) got the other TD for the ‘Rockers Sunday on a sneak at the end of the game to put SDM ahead by the final score. Russell had 183 yards passing and completed 22 of 33 attempts with no interceptions. SD Mines place kicker Andy Smith (sophomore from Pierre, S.D.) accounted for a long field goal as the soccer player turned football star connected on a 46‐yarder in the second quarter. The Hardrocker defense was solid when it needed to be Sunday keeping the Yellow Jackets out of the end zone on their final drive. An attempt at a 30‐yard field goal with less than 10 second on the clock failed as BHSU had too many men on the field and the scoreboard ticked down to zero. Individually, defensive back Josh Sherman (freshman from Colome, S.D.) led the team in tackles with 20 and also had one pass breakup. Linebacker Tyrell Anderson (junior from Green River, Wyo.) had 11 tackles and Tom Lunzman (sophomore from Gretna, Neb.) finished the game with 10 tackles and two pass breakups. Senior Chad Westendorf (Geddes, S.D.) had a big day, collecting two tackles and saving a game‐changing touchdown by intercepting a pass and returning it 30 yards. Freshman Eric Yeash (Louisville, Colo.) also had an interception on the day. The Hardrockers will lose the services of nine seniors. Westendorf, Matt Deardoff (Brandon, S.D.), Joshua Jones (Long Beach, Calif.), Michael Kennedy (Pine Bluff, Wyo.), Justin Griesinger (Apple Valley, Minn.), Jordan Anderson (Vermillion), Matt Fisher (Mountain View, Wyo.), Jarrod Luze (Brookings, S.D.) and Colton Clark (Worland, Wyo.) Volleyball SPEARFISH ‐‐‐ The South Dakota School of Mines women's volleyball team saw its season come to a close over the weekend falling to Black Hills State, 3‐0, in the first round of the Dakota Athletic Conference Playoffs Saturday in Spearfish. It was the third loss of the season to the Yellow Jackets as the Lady Hardrockers came up short this past Wednesday, 3‐1, also played in Spearfish in the regular season finally. On top of that, the weather took a turn for the worse and winter's first blizzard caused chaos across South Dakota. So much so in Spearfish that the Hardrockers were stranded for two full days. The team returned to Rapid City Friday night and then made the return trip to Spearfish Saturday afternoon for another go at the Yellow Jackets. In Wednesday match, BHSU def. SD Mines, 25‐20, 23‐25, 25‐19, 25‐18 and Saturday DAC quarterfinal bout was BHSU over the Hardrockers, 25‐23, 25‐21, 27‐25. ""I think we were very competitive for both matches, " said Hardrocker head volleyball coach Beth Honaker. "It was just those long runs (by BHSU) that hurt us." In Wednesday's match, freshman Madi Lane (Fort Collins, Colo.) led the Lady Hardrockers in kills with 15, followed by junior Katherine Hanson with 13 and senior Ashley Kauffman (Fort Morgan, Colo.) tallied 10. Senior Jenny Hiykel (Omaha, Neb.) who is this week's Dakota Athletic Conference Libero of the Week, collected 18 digs in the match. In Saturday's bout, Kauffman had 13 kills, Lane added nine and Hanson contributed with six. Hiykel, Kauffman and Hanson all came up with 15 digs. The Hardrockers end their season with a 12‐16 record and finish 4‐10 in conference play. "Even though things didn't turn out the way we had planned going into this season, I think I've learned more from this team as a coach then I have from any other team I have been associated with, " Honaker added. The Lady Hardrockers will lose Kauffman, Hiykel, Amanda Cammack (Sturgis, S.D.), Renae Keppen (Dakota Dunes, S.D.) Alena Ori (Kalspell, Mont.) and Stephanie Carpio (Yuma, Colo.). Cross Country MADISON, S.D. ‐‐‐ With an extra day of preparation thanks to the first blizzard of the season, the South Dakota School of Mines men's and women's cross country team traveled to Madison, S.D. Sunday morning to compete in the Dakota Athletic Conference Championships. Despite all the hard work that the Hardrockers put in this season, they were unable to qualify anyone for the NAIA National Cross Country Championships on either the men's or women's side. "Disappointed is a good word to describe it, " said Hardrocker head cross country coach Jerry Schafer. In the women's race, Lady Hardrocker Brittney Hovdenes (sophomore from Rapid City) earned DAC All Conference honors after finishing 12th clocking a time of 21 minutes and 33.55 seconds and teammate Kendra Chrisman (sophomore from Rapid City) took 21st after posting a time of 22:37.07. "I thought Kendra and Brittney would both qualified for Nationals but they just didn't have their best races like other teams did, " Shafer said. "Our girls gave great efforts but their times just weren't the best of the season." SD Mines junior Kendal Donegan (Colorado Springs, Colo.) finished 39th and freshman Christina Quiett (Gettysburg, S.D.) rounded out the day with a 44th place finish while clocking a 28:50.79. Schafer added that he was unable to fill a full women's team due to a couple of his runners getting ill (senior Jessica Chretien and freshman Kelsey Feist). "We only lose Jessica to graduation and I think we have a good nucleus to work on, " Schafer said of his women's team. "Now we will refocus our efforts on track." The SD Mines men did have enough to fill a full team as the Hardrockers finished fourth with 112 points. Black Hills State won the men's division with 26 points, Dickinson State was runner‐up with 42 and Dakota State got third with 94 points. Schafer again used the word "disappointment "to describe the mood after the race. He felt he had one of the best teams that SD Mines had seen in over a decade and Sunday's outcome was not one they were hoping for. "It's not that our runners didn't give it their full effort ‐‐‐ they did. We just didn't get it done, " he said. SDM freshman Matt Pike (Winnemucca, Nev.) was the highest finisher on the team with an 18th place showing (just three spots from a Top 15 and DAC All‐Conference honor). He clocked a time of 29:07.82. Hardrocker sophomore Lucas Fried (Kodiak, Ala.) was a few spots back in 24th with a 29:41.77; freshman Eb Nordahl (Molt, Mont.) grabbed 26th after clocking a 29:48.76; junior Marcus Moor (Kadoka, S.D.) finished in 29th position with a 30:13.28; senior Andy Lein (Gordon, Neb.) was 38th in a time of 31:22.81 and freshman Blake James (Friendsville, Texas) posted a 31:31.42 for 39th place. Women's basketball EAST RIVER ‐‐‐‐ The South Dakota School of Mines women's basketball team split a delayed road trip to the east side of the state Sunday and Monday first falling to the Mount Marty College Lady Lancers, 71‐53, Sunday in Yankton, S.D., and then turned around and upset the No. 8 ranked Dakota Wesleyan University Lady Tigers, 82‐69, Monday in Mitchell. Against the Lancers, Mount Marty ran out to an 18‐point advantage at the end of the first half, 39‐21, which was the difference in the game as both squads posted 31 points over the final 20 minutes. Individually for the Hardrockers, junior Bethany Holyoak (Moorcroft, Wyo.) led the way with 14 points, while new transfer Natasha Begay (junior from Paige, Ariz.) contributed with 12 and freshman Ariel Granillo put up 10 markers. Against DWU, the Hardrockers jumped out to a 10‐point edge in the first period, 48‐38, and then bettered the Tigers in the second half, 34‐31, to improve their record to 2‐2 for the year. SD Mines had four ladies in double figures in Monday's win as Holyoak again paced the team with her second double‐double of the season. She had 25 points and 12 rebounds. She was followed by freshman Maria Luze (Brookings, S.D.) who came off the bench to cash in for 18 points. Both Granillo and fellow freshman Loryn Schuetzle added 13 apiece to help keep the ‘Rockers out in front. The Lady ‘Rockers will be home this weekend hosting the Howard Johnson SD Mines Woman's Basketball Classic Friday and Saturday at the King Center. SDM plays Rocky Mountain College Friday and Doane on Saturday. Men's Basketball EAST RIVER ‐‐‐ The South Dakota School of Mines men's basketball team split a weekend road trip to the eastern side of the state to take on former SDIC foes Mount Marty College and Dakota Wesleyan University. The Hardrockers defeated the Lancers Sunday evening in Yankton, 67‐63, before falling to the Tigers, 68‐63, at the dreaded Corn Palace in Mitchell. Against Mount Marty, the Hardrockers rallied from a two‐point deficit at the half, 39‐37, and outscored the home team, 30‐24, in the second frame to earn the ‘W'. Junior Robbie Fedor (Monticello, Minn.) had the hot hand for the ‘Rockers, dishing in 17 points followed by sophomore AJ Trennepohl (Lubbock, Texas) who had 13 points and sophomore Kaleb Rehmer (Gillette, Wyo.) came in off the bench and put up 11. Another factor was that SD Mines was able to limit their turnovers to 15 while causing Mount Marty to give it up 21 times. In Monday's bout, the Hardrockers shot 41 percent from the field in the game and 19 percent from behind the arc, delivering on just 5 of 26 three‐point goals. Dakota Wesleyan went up by nine at the break, 34‐25, which was just enough to stave off a Hardrocker comeback in the second half as SDM outscored the Tigers, 38‐34. Fedor again paced the ‘Rockers with 16 points, while freshman Nate Jacobson (Rapid City, S.D.) contributed with 10 markers and both senior Brandon Smith (Amenia, N.D.) and junior Kyle Turpin (Post Falls, Ida.) cashed in for eight points. The split give the Hardrockers a 2‐2 record for the year and will next make their 2008‐09 season home debut playing games Thursday (against Rocky Mountain College) and Sunday (vs. Montana Tech). |
