| Transcript | By Brad Blume Sports Information Director South Dakota School of Mines RAPID CITY ‐‐‐The South Dakota School of Mines had another busy week in sports as the Hardrocker football team hosted Mayville State for M‐Day while the Lady ‘Rocker volleyball team made a trip to Madison, S.D. and Mayville, N.D. for a pair of Dakota Athletic Conference matches and the SDM men's golf team finished up the fall portion of their schedule competing at a two‐day tournament in Mitchell, S.D. Football RAPID CITY‐‐‐ The SD School of Mines football team used its confidence and momentum from their win last week over Dakota State as fuel for their homecoming game against the Mayville State Comets Saturday afternoon on Dunham Field at O'Harra Stadium in Rapid City. The Hardrockers pulled off an impressive win with a 46‐7 drubbing to improve to 4‐1 on the season and 2‐0 in conference play and hold a share of first place in the DAC standings. The Hardrocker defense was put to the test early and came through with flying colors pulling off not one, but two goal line stands to keep the Comets out of the end zone and off the scoreboard. The Hardrockers first score came in the second quarter when sophomore kicker Justin Whalin (Rapid City) made good on a 32‐yard field goal. Later in the second freshman quarterback Nick Russell (San Diego, Calif.) found a wide open Logan Scmidt (Menno, S.D.) who scampered in from 36 yards out to put the ‘Rockers up, 10‐0. The Comets were able to answer on their next series, busting out a number of big plays on the ground until they got down inside the five‐yard line. It appeared that SDM might pull off a third goal‐line stand on the day, but the determined Mayville Comets were able punch one in from two yards out. In the second half however, the Comets had no answer for the Hardrockers. Early in the third, sophomore Tim Luchini (Findlay, Ohio) recorded a sack and then forced a fumble on the visiting quarterback. Teammate Zach Marcus (sophomore from Olivia, Minn.) scooped it up and returned it back for a 21‐yard defensive touchdown. Later in the third, Russell connected with Ed Waliczek for a 20‐yard TD strike. Then It was freshman Jamie Dale' s turn. The Alpine, Calif. native scored three straight fourth‐quarter touchdowns for the ‘Rockers. He recorded two rushing TD's from 18 and 56 yards and added a 27 TD reception from Dale. The three scores Saturday gave Dale a share of the Hardrockers season scoring record of 78 points. With five games still on the schedule, odd are in Dale's favor to own the record outright. The Pre‐Professional Health major ended with 149 rushing yards and 82 receiving yards to post 231 total yards on the day. Russell had another stellar outing as quarterback completing 15 of 27 passes for 233 yards and three touchdowns with two interceptions. Russell was able to hit six different receivers on the day. Tight end Jason Beilstein also had a good day, catching five passes for 63 yards and Smidt ending the game with three catches for 60 yards. The Hardrockers are having quite a season and it hasn't gone unnoticed on the national level. SD School of Mines received votes again this week to be considered for the NAIA Top 25 coaches poll. It is the third time this season that has happened. SDM has really measured up on a the national scale statistically. The team holds 11 Top 10 rankings including six Top 5 catagories. The ‘Rockers are currently first in putn return yards per attempt (21.2 yards); third in kick‐off return yards per attempt (28.5); fourth in opponent third down conversion (21.7 percent); fifth in pass defense per game (125) and fifth in oppent Penalties (159). The Hardrockers are home again this weekend playing host to the Jamestown College Jimmies Saturday in a 1 p.m. bout. Volleyball The SD School of Mines women's volleyball team had another important road trip this past weekend playing Dakota Athletic Conference matches at Dakota State in Madison, S.D. and at Mayville State in North Dakota. The Hardrockers came away with a split on the weekend, defeating the DSU Trojans, 3‐0, but came up short to the Lady Comets, 3‐0. The Hardrockers defeated Dakota State, 25‐15, 26‐24, 25‐23. SDM senior Ashley Kauffman (Ft. Morgan, Colo.) led the team with 10 kills and was 37‐43 on the attack. Freshman Madi Lane (Ft. Collins, Colo.) had seven kills in the match and was a perfect 19‐19 on the attack. Senior Jenny Hiykel (Omaha, Neb.) excelled defensively with 34 digs and 21 receptions. Saturday's game proved to be a tough one to swallow for the senior laden ��Rockers. Mayville State upset them, 25‐21, 25‐20, 25‐16. Kauffman again led the offensive cause, with eight kills while going 34‐42 on the attack. Lane posted seven kills and was 21‐31 on the attack. Hiykel again led the defense with 21 digs. Her weekend efforts netted her the DAC Libero of the Week Award. The Hardrockers are now 2‐4 in conference play and will next host Black Hills State Wednesday evening at the King Center in a 7 p.m. match. Golf The SD School of Mines men's golf team's fall season came to a close this past weekend after a two‐day, 36‐hole tournament at Wild Oak Golf Club in Mitchell South Dakota. The Hardrockers turn in a team score of 647 (318‐329) to finish eighth at the tourney. DWU won the event with a 590 and Minot State tied for second with Morningside College with a 606. The even winner went to Matt Bertsch of the University of Sioux Falls who carded 144. SDSM&T's Cody Vostad (freshman from Canton, S.D.) was able to crack the Top 20 in a very competitive field. The junior posted a two‐day score of 157 (79‐78) to capture a share of 19th place. As for the rest of the ��Rockers, Quinton Patterson (senior from Sioux Falls) put up a 162 (82‐80), Brandon Eisenbraun (Junior from Yankton, S.D.) carded a 164 (79‐85), Brad Schaack (junior from Vermillion, S.D.) came in with a 164 (78‐86), Andy Ford (junior from Custer, S.D.) shot a 174 (84‐87) and Sam Hermanson (junior from Rapid City, S.D.) ended with a 174 (82‐92). The SDM golf team will put their clubs in closet for the winter months and resume play in April when the Hardrockers host a meet on April 19‐20. |
