| Transcript | SDM XC to host Hardrocker / Yellow Jacket duals By Brad Blume Sports Information Director South Dakota School of Mines RAPID CITY ‐‐‐ The South Dakota School of Mines cross country teams will hold the Hardrocker / Yellow Jacket dual Saturday morning at Robbinsdale Park in Rapid City. The Hardrockers men's and women's cross country squads will go head‐to‐head with the Black Hills State teams along with a few other individual runners from near‐by institutions. "The race was originally scheduled as a dual between us and BHSU, " said Hardrocker head cross country coach Jerry Schafer. "It's still shaping up to be that way with several other small colleges participating. Gillette Community College, Oglala Lakota College (from Pine Ridge) and Sinte���Gleska University (from Mission) will all have runners competing. The women's race starts at 10 a.m. with the men's race to follow. The women will run a 5 kilometer course while the men's race is schedule to be an 8K run. For the Hardrockers, Saturday's event will be the first time in three weekends that either the men or women have been in competition. The last time SDM ran was Sept. 27 in Madison at the Dakota State Invite. "For us, this race is important, " Schafer said. "We missed the meet last week in Billings, Mont., because of the weather. We've had a longer layoff than we would have liked. Our runners are chomping at the bit and ready to compete." The ‘Rockers couldn't have asked for a better team to compete against as both the Yellow Jacket men and women are nationally ranked in the NAIA. The Lady Yellow Jackets are seventh in the latest coaches' poll while the men come in at No. 11. "Our goal is to go out and try to compete with them. We want our top runners to go out and challenge their top runners" Schafer added. "We also want to show improvement from our last meet in Madison three weekends ago." The course at Robbinsdale Park is challenging for the runners but is spectator friendly at the same time. The women's course is 50 percent flat and 50 percent uneven terrain while the men have a 40/60 differential. On a scale from 1‐5, Schafer rates his course as a 4 in difficulty. The times will be a tad slower than other courses the Hardrockers will run on this season but it's a challenge for the athletes and makes for a good race. "It's one of the more difficult courses around, " Schafer said. "But (spectators) can watch most of the race and see the athletes several times from the start finish line." |
