| Transcript | By Brad Blume Sports Information Director South Dakota School of Mines Men's Basketball RAPID CITY --- The South Dakota School of Mines men's basketball team took one huge step forward in securing a home game in the Dakota Athletic Conference playoffs later this month by winning two important contests this past weekend at the King Center in Rapid City. The Hardrockers took care of business Friday night with a victory over Dickinson State, 72- 68, and kept the momentum in Saturday's bout, taking down the Minot State Beavers, 98-84. In Friday's game, the SD School of Mines looked very impressive in the first half and jumped out to a 16-point advantage, 36-20. The Blue Hawks however played much better in the second period catching and overtaking the Hardrockers with about 10 minutes left in the game. It was a tug-of-war battle from there with the ‘Rockers coming out on top. "Overall it was a good effort on the offensive and defensive end. We really shut them down only giving up 20 points in the first half, " said Hardrocker men's basketball head coach Jason Henry. "But then we went and gave away 46 in the second half, so it was definitely a tale of two halves." The Hardrockers hit some clutch field goals and free throws down the stretch to quell Dickinson's surge and win the game. SDM was 25-29 from the foul line for 86 percent. Individually, senior Donny DeGooyer (Great Falls, Mont.) had a very impressive night, chipping in for 18 points. Sophomore AJ Trennepohl (Lubbock, Texas) also scored in double figures, marking up 14 points on the night, including a 3-3 performance from behind the arch. Senior Brandon Smith (Amenia, N.D.) and junior Carl Johnson (Rapid City, S.D.) also contributed knocking down eight points each. Saturday's game was another see-saw battle, with several ties and several lead changes. The Hardrockers took advantage of some key three-point plays late in the game thanks mainly to sophomore Kaleb Rehmer (Cheyenne, Wyo.). Rehmer drove to the basket twice down-the stretch making the bucket and getting fouled on the play. He converted at the line to give SD Mines that extra boost to win the game. Rehmer ended with 11 points on the night and was 5-6 from the free throw line. Photo by Brad Blume "Kaleb Rehmer had been hurt and missing a few games, but down the stretch (against Minot) had a couple of three-point plays which was probably the difference in the game, " Henry said. Minot led by one at the half, 44-43, and then the Hardrockers put up 55 in the second frame to the Beavers 40. Johnson paced the ‘Rockers with 16 points, eight rebounds and two blocks, while Scott May (sophomore from Aurora, Colo.) and Trennepohl contributed with 14 points each, Smith cashed in for 13 and senior Kyle Kurth (Pierre, S.D.) added 10 points and recorded five assists. Next up, the Hardrockers head to Spearfish, S.D., on Wednesday for Round 2 against the Black Hills State Yellow Jackets. "Heading into Wednesday's game it gives us a little bit of confidence. We played two ranked teams (Minot and Dickinson) and going to Black Hills State, a team that has a chance to be in the Top 5 in the country, it's a huge rivalry game for the Hardrockers, " Henry said. "It will be a packed house and will have a great atmosphere for both teams. I am looking forward to it." Women's Basketball RAPID CITY --- The South Dakota School of Mines women's basketball team went through some lows and some highs this past weekend at home in the King Center as the Lady Hardrockers split a pair of Dakota Athletic Conference contests. The Dickinson State Blue Hawks defeated SD Mines, 62-43, Friday night but the Hardrockers regrouped Saturday to take down the Minot State Beavers, 74-68. SD Mines had trouble getting things going in the first half against Dickinson as the Hardrockers posted just 18 points to the Hawks 30. The second half didn't net much better results as DSU outscored the home team, 32-25. The Hardrockers were without the services of freshman Arial Granillo (Chandler, Ariz.) due to injury --- and SDM's top scorer, Bethany Holyoak, was held to under double digit points for the first time all season. Sophomore Stephanie Bjustrom (Algona, Iowa) stepped up for the Hardrockers, scoring 11 points on the night. Sophomore Jerika Ihnen (Tea, S.D.) also played well with nine markers and four blocks. Photo by Brad Blume Saturday's bout was a complete "180" for the Lady Hardrockers with balanced scoring and stout defense. The score was knotted at 36-36 at the half. SD Mines was able to break the stalemate late in the second period, outscoring Minot, 38-32, to earn the victory. Five SD Mines players scored in double figures. Ihnen led the charge with 14 points and seven rebounds. Holyoak got back to her productive ways with 12 points and six rebounds and senior Jessica Tsingine (Tuba City, Ariz.), freshman Maria Luze (Brookings, S.D.) and junior Leah Sundby (Williston, N.D.) all contributed with 10 points each. With the split the SDM women's team now has an overall record of 9-16 and is 5-6 in the conference and in fifth place in the DAC standings. If the SD Mines women want to host a first-round playoff game later this month they will have to be in the top four of the DAC standings. Jamestown College currently holds the No. 4 spot with a 6-4 conference record. Indoor Track VERMILLION, S.D. --- The South Dakota School of Mines men's and women's track teams made the long trek across the state to take part in the Bill Hillenbrand Invitational held at the University of South Dakota in Vermillion, S.D., this past weekend There were a large number of teams at every level in the Dakotadome. The Hardrockers represented SD Mines well, placing in a few events and setting new school records in the process. Freshman Madi Lane (Fort Collins, Colo.) set a new SDM school record in the high jump when she cleared 5-feet-3.75 inches. The old indoor record was held by Anne Larson at 5-2 back in 2002. In this weekend's event, Lane took fifth place. The men's distance medley relay team also set a new school record. The DMR team of Colton Reid (Colstrip, Mont), Jason Simmons (New Underwood, Colo.), Scott Anderson (Gillette, Wyo., ) and Lucas Fried (Kodiak, Ala.) clocked a time of 10 minutes, 49.84 seconds to set the new mark at Mines. The old mark of 11:06.64 was set back in 2001 by Jason Arp, Mike Phenicie, Andy Coats and Pat Schwickerath. Fried also performed well in the mile run, taking seventh place in a time of 4:30.69. A number of personal best (PB) and season best (SB) marks were improved upon at the weekend meet. They included: Sophomore Everett Brill (Elko, Nev.) in the weight throw (46-0.75) for a PB and very close to tying a school record, freshman Kendra Crisman (Rapid City, S.D.) in the 800-meter run (2:34.00) for a SB; Kendall Donegan (Colorado Springs, Colo.) in the 800 (2:46.44) for a PB; Brittany Hovdenes (freshman from Rapid City) in the 3, 000 (11:36.70) for a SB; Marcus Moor (junior from Kadoka, S.D.) in the 3, 000 (9:44.06) for a PB; Thomas Everett (freshman from Missoula, Mont.) in the 3, 000 (9:47.17) for a PB; and Reid in the 1, 000 (2:40.88). Next up, the Hardrockers are off to Aberdeen, S.D. for the Northern State Invitational. That meet gets underway at 10 a.m. (CST). |
