On the women's side, sophomore and Rapid City native Shannon Hellman continues her domination in the 55-meter high hurdles, winning the event Saturday in a time of 8.40 seconds. Hellman is already automatically qualified in that event to compete at the NAIA National Meet March 8-10 in Johnson City, Tenn. Hellman also took third in the 400 Dash, clocking a time of 1:00.86 which set a new South Dakota School of Mines record that she previously held. It was also her personal-best time. Freshman Jenny Strong also had a good meet, placing sixth in the triple jump with a leap of 32-feet-1.75 inches. On the men's side, the Hardrockers are showing their competitive fangs in numerous events. The distance runners have really made great strides, and proved it Saturday posting times in the Top 6 in several races. "The distance runners competed well (Saturday), " said Hardrocker head coach Jerry Schafer. "They only improved on their times slightly, but are still competing at a high level." Of the distance runners, sophomore Colton Reid, Colstrip Mont., took third in the 800 run in a time of 2:00.44; freshman Nate Hick earned third in the Mile (4:45.71) and sixth in the 3, 000 (9:48.45) while junior Kyle Kattke was fourth in the mile (4:45.99) and fourth in the 3, 000 (9:37.29), freshman red-shirt Erik Bjornebo, running unattached, raced to a sixth-place finish in the mile with a mark of 5:09.93. South Dakota Mines also ran two teams in the 1, 600 relay in which the team made up of three freshmen and a junior secured third place with a time of 3:36.08. That team consisted of freshmen Mark Wager, Dustin Jordan, Jason Simmons and junior Colin Royer. Junior pole vaulter Chandler Caldwell was very close once again to an automatic bid at Saturday meet. After clearing 15-feet-0-inches, three tries at 15-5 fell just short for the Metallurgical Engineering major. He took second at the meet. "He just missed at 15-5, Schafer said. "He's getting closer and closer each week." Caldwell is provisionally qualified with his 15-0 height that he cleared in competition at an earlier meet and also set a SDM record with. In other highlights for the men, junior Jake Donnelly raced to a season best in the prelims of the 55 dash and then locked up fifth place in the finals in a time of 6.67; Eric Voorhees got fourth during the shot put in a very competitive field. The senior from Gillette, Wyo., recorded a distance of 48-11 for the fourth spot. Voorhees is also a national qualifier in that event and will get an opportunity to compete at the NAIA Meet. Next up, the Hardrockers travel to Vermillion Thursday. Men's Basketball The South Dakota School of Mines men's basketball team had a very successful road trip to North Dakota this past weekend, earning Dakota Athletic Conference victories over Minot State and Dickinson State. The two wins also clinched the Hardrockers home-court advantage for at least the first two rounds of the post season playoffs as the senior laden team locked up the No. 2 position in the conference standings and still have a shot at the No. 1 spot. Along with winning the two games and improving their record to 14-13 on the season (9-4 in the DAC), individually accolades went out to senior Casey Schmitz, for scoring over 1, 000 points during his career at South Dakota School of Mines, and teammate and fellow senior Brandon Lord for earning DAC Player of the Week honors for his efforts over the weekend. In the two games, Lord averaged 16.5 points, 6.5 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 0.5 steals in the two-game stint. Against Minot, the Hardrockers posted a 81-71 win. SDM was able to break away in the first half, outscoring the Beavers, 46-39. That kept that cushion in the second half to earn the first win in Minot since 2001. Individually, senior Brandon Fredrickson led the way for Mines, knocking down 17 points. Fellow senior Matt Lyndoe added 14 points, Schmitz had 13 and Lord put up 10 markers. Against Dickinson, the Hardrockers rallied back from a four-point halftime deficit to win the contest, 81-77. Mines outscored the Blue Hawks, 43-35, over the final 20 minutes to earn the ‘W'. Lord paced all scorers in the game, connecting for 23 points. Schmitz put up 14 markers and Lyndoe contributed with 13. The Hardrockers finish up regular season action Thursday against big-time rival Black Hills State. Womens Basketball The South Dakota School of Mines women's basketball squad split on their final road trip to North Dakota over the weekend. Going 1-1 on the road gave the Lady Hardrockers a 7-6 Dakota Athletic Conference record (17-10 overall mark) and fifth place in the standings. If they win their final regular season game over Black Hills State Thursday at home, they would be --- at worst --- fourth place and would be able to host a home game Feb. 21. Minot State was able to get a little revenge over the Hardrockers in the second installment this past Friday, winning the bout, 80-73. SDM held a one-point edge at the half, 38-37, but then was outscored 43-35 in the second period. Despite the loss, the ‘Rockers got a lot of production out of their lineup as four players reached double figures. Both Jennie Malone and Bethany Holyoak cashed in for 18 points to lead all scorers while Amber DeWeerd added 14 and Melanie Vedvei dished in 12. The Hardrockers were able to keep the point production going Saturday against Dickinson State, hanging a nine-point loss on the Blue Hawks, 83-74. South Dakota Mines took a five-point edge at the half, 34-29, and then outscored Dickinson 49-45 in the second half. The Hardrockers again saw four women score in double digits. Malone and DeWeerd both put up 17 markers while Vedvei recorded a double double with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Holyoak added 14 points of her own to help win the game. |
