| Transcript | By Brad Blume Sports Information Director South Dakota School of Mines RAPID CITY --- The South Dakota School of Mines athletic department recently announced the addition of a two-sport recruit in Matt McGee to join the school for the 2009-10 year. He will be a new addition to the Hardrocker football team as well as the SDM track and field program. McGee is a 5-foot-11-inch athlete from Butte, Mont., that brings speed to both the gridiron and the track. He competed for the Butte High School Bulldogs. For the football team, McGee will be featured mainly on special teams and in the defensive secondary. "Matt is a track guy that has that quickness and speed for special teams. We also think he will have an opportunity to fit into the defensive secondary, " said Hardrocker head football coach Dan Kratzer. "There is an adjustment to the college level when you defend those bigger receivers, but Matt is quick and aggressive and up to the challenge." For the track team, McGee will be focusing mainly on the sprinting events competing in the 100-, 200- and 400-meter races. "Matt is going to be a great addition to the Hardrocker track program. He will give us added depth in the sprint events for next year, " said Hardrocker head track coach Jerry Schafer. McGee said he chose SD Mines for academic reasons and also was impressed with both coach Schafer's and coach Kratzer's attitude toward academics. "While the energy and the intensity of the athletic programs are on a par with any school, the coaches made it crystal clear that the term ‘student-athlete' means that academics comes first and if I have a lab or a class that I have to take, I need to go there first and they'll deal with rearranging practice, " McGee said. "I look forward to joining the Hardrockers and contributing to both the football and track programs." McGee will major Interdisciplinary Sciences with a pre-medical emphasis and will come in with enough college credits to place him into his sophomore year.
