TranscriptBy Brad Blume Sports Information Director South Dakota School of Mines RAPID CITY --- The South Dakota School of Mines men's track team added a quality athlete to it roster recently when the Hardrockers signed new recruit Garrett Schaal to the 2009-10 team. Schaal is from Gordon, Neb., and will join the ‘Rocker track and field program after he graduates from Rushville High School in Gordon this spring. Schaal is a five-sport athlete at the high school level. When he makes the transition to college he will focus solely on his future as a track standout. At SD Mines he will be a sprinter, competing in the 100-, 200- and 400-meter races. "Garrett will have an immediate impact for the Hardrock track team in the sprint events, " said Hardrocker head track head coach Jerry Schafer. "We anticipate Garrett joining the long tradition of great 400-meter runners that have competed for the Hardrockers." Schaal has a long list of accomplishment in his athletic career, including a fourth-place finish in the 400 dash at the Class B Nebraska State Track Meet last year. In that race he clocked a time of 50.57 seconds. Schaal also holds the school record in the 400 with a 49.9. Schaal has been named to the Western Trails All Conference list three years in a row, been a state medalist for the past two years, a state qualifier for the past three seasons and been to the Best in the West Classic Track Meet three consecutive times. While attending SD School of Mines, Schaal plans to major in Chemical Engineering. The School of Mines has a proud heritage of preparing graduates to serve as leaders in engineering and science.
