| Transcript | By Brad Blume Sports Information Director Indoor Track CHADRON, NEB. --- The South Dakota School of Mines men's and women track teams traveled to Nebraska this past Friday evening to compete in the Eagle Twilight Invitational on the campus of Chadron State. The Hardrockers gave some impressive performances setting a couple personal-best marks and even one provisional qualification to the NAIA National Championships that will be held in March at Johnson City, Tenn. Freshman high jumper Madison Lane (Fort Collins, Colo.) earned the provisional after clearing a height of 5-foot-3-inches. That leap was also good enough to earn her second in the meet and puts her as the third-best jumper in the Dakota Athletic Conference. "Madi cleared 5-3 and had some good shots at the next height of 5-5, " said Hardrocker head track coach Jerry Schafer. Fellow high jumper Ashley Stewart also performed well in the event. The junior from Scotland, S.D., took third after a leap of 5-1. And like Lane, Stewart also had some good attempts at the next height as well. "Ashley Stewart's 5-1 equaled last year's best jump, " Schafer said. "Both girls jumped closer to their potential and I was pleased with what the got done in the meet." Hardrocker sophomore Brittney Hovdenes (Rapid City, S.D.) had an impressive 800-meter run, winning the event Friday and posting a time of 2 minutes and 35.31 seconds. Schafer said her time was very comparable to the marks she put up last week during the BHSU Invite. SDM freshman Ashley Kemnitz made her debut in the 55 hurdles where she ran a fast time of 9.69 during the prelims. Unfortunately she suffered a hamstring injury in the finals but was still able to finish the race (12.42). On the men's side, junior Colton Reid continues to make progress in the mid-distance events. At Friday's meet, the Colstrip, Mont., native clocked a time of 2:03.02 in the 800 which earned him second place. "Colton ran a good race in the (800), " Schafer said. "He is getting his competitiveness back after redshirting last year." Jason Simmons (junior from New Underwood, S.D.) set a school indoor 60- meter record with his preliminary run in the 55 Dash on Friday. Simmons time of 6.49 converts to a 7.00 60 dash time. Simmons converted time is.03 second faster than the record set by Dain Patterson in 1997. Simmons got seventh in the finals of Friday's race after posting a time of 6.64. ‘Rocker thinclads shine at Eagle Twilight meet Madi Lane Jason Simmons Other highlights for the Hardrocker men, included: Marcus Moor (Kadoka, S.D.) finished third in the 5, 000 run in a time of 16:44.98; while teammate Matt Pike(freshman from Winnemucca, Nev.) was a spot back in fourth with a time of 16:46.17; freshman Thomas Everett earned sixth in the 5, 000 Run posting a time of 17:42.01; Eb Nordahl finished the same race in seventh spot in a time of 19:31.50; freshman Rod McRae (Redfield, S.D.) represented SD Mines in the jumping events taking ninth place in both the long jump (19-3.25) and the triple jump (37-11.50); senior Matt Deardoff (Brandon, S.D.) secured eighth place in the shot put with a toss of 46-2.5; and sophomore Everett Brill (Elko, Nev.) had a personal best mark of 40-4.75 in the shot put for 12th and also took sixth in the weight throw with a throw of 45-7.25. "Overall, I thought the kids competed much better this week than the previous week at Black Hills State, " Schafer said. "They were more aggressive in all their events, they were better in the technical aspect of their events and I think we are headed in the right direction." Schafer added that the Hardrockers do have several people injured but they are slowly getting back to 100 percent. Next up, the Hardrockers head to Vermillion, S.D. Saturday for the University of South Dakota Invitational. Men's Basketball RAPID CITY --- The South Dakota School of Mines men's basketball team came out on the short end of the stick this past weekend dropping two Dakota Athletic Conference games on the road in Mayville, N.D. against the Mayville State Comets and in Madison, S.D., to the Dakota State Trojans. "We came out strong in both games this weekend, " said Hardrocker men's head coach Jason Henry. "We built up pretty good leads and then just lost our intensity in both outings. We gave up easy baskets and the effort was just not where it needed to be by some individuals." In Friday's matchup, the Comets came away with the victory, 77-74. The SD School of Mines held a six-point edge at the half, 39-33, but got outscored down the stretch as the Comets put up 44 points to the Hardrockers' 35 in the second period. SD Mines sophomore Brent Cass (with ball) splits two Valley City defenders and he gets two points on an easy jump shot during a recent home game. Photo by Brad Blume SD Mines Brandon Smith did his part for the Hardrockers, leading his team in scoring and rebounding. The senior from Amenia, N.D., cashed in for 16 points and grabbed 10 rebounds in the game. Fellow senior Donny DeGooyer (Great Falls, Mont.) also had a good night with 14 markers and sophomore AJ Trennepohl (Lubbock, Texas) contributed with 11 points. On Saturday, the Dakota State Trojans pulled the upset, defeating the Hardrockers, 73-67. Free throws were a big key for the DSU win as the home team sank 26-33, shooting 79 percent in the game. SD Mines had just a two-point tilt at the half, 30-28, and much like Friday's game, the Hardrockers were outscored down the stretch and couldn't mount a come-back in time. The Trojans posted 45 points in the second half to SDM's 37. Smith again had a big game for the ‘Rockers, recording 14 points in the game, while Robbie Fedor (junior from Monticello, Minn.) posted 13, Carl Johnson (junior from Rapid City, S.D.) added 11 and Trennepohl contributed with 10 off the bench. With the two losses, the Hardrockers' record falls to 15-8 overall and 4-5 in the DAC. SDM also drops from third in the conference standings to fourth. "It was a long trip for the Hardrockers, but the true is that we didn't get it done against two teams that we need to get wins from, " Henry added. Mines will next see action this weekend on the final two home games of the regular season when the Hardrockers play host to Minot State Friday and Dickinson State Saturday. Women's Basketball RAPID CITY --- The South Dakota School of Mines women's basketball team made their longest North Dakota road trip of the season this past weekend, traveling all the way to Mayville, N.D. to take on the Lady Comets and then took on Dakota State in Madison, S.D. on the trek back. The journey way up north paid off for the Lady Hardrockers, as the weary travelers won the bout, 69-64. It was a back-and-forth battle, but the Hardrockers were able to break away late in the game to post the ‘W'. The Comets led at the half, 29-27, but then the Hardrockers surged in the second half, posting 42 points to Mayville's 35. Junior sensation Bethany Holyoak (Moorcroft, Wyo.) showed her consistency, cashing in for 22 points, grabbed six rebounds and one block to lead the ‘Rockers. Whitney Ashford (sophomore from Littleton, Colo.) also impressed off the bench with 14 markers and sophomore Loryn Schuetzle dished in eight points on the night. Saturday's matchup did not net the same results as the DSU Lady T's took control early and stayed just out of reach of the ‘Rockers to win the DAC game, 76-68.DSU held a four-point advantage in the first frame, 32-28, and had the same results in the second half, 44-40. Free throws contributed to the home team's win as Dakota State shot 72 percent from the line, cashing in on 18-25. Holyoak recorded her 10th double-double of the season with 14 points and 11 rebounds while Jerika Ihnen (sophomore from Tea, S.D.) cashed in for 10 points. Schuetzle also did well grabbing 11 boards and scored seven points. With the split on the weekend, the Lady ‘Rockers record is now 8-15 on the season and 4-5 in conference play. SD Mines is currently fifth in the DAC standings and will next welcome Minot State and Dickinson this weekend to the King Center.
