By Brad Blume Sports Information Director South Dakota School of Mines RAPID CITY --- The South Dakota School of Mines men's basketball team accomplished a number of feats Saturday night during a non-conference bout against NCAA Div. II Chadron State University (Nebraska) at the King Center in Rapid City. First and foremost, the Hardrocker defeated the CSU Eagles, 81-69. In the process, the SD Mines men also improved their overall record to 13-3 on the season and most importantly earned their 11th consecutive win. Doing that tied a 17-year SD Mines school record which was set back during the 1991-92 season when the Hardrockers, under the direction of Hugh Welsh, finished the year with a 22-9 mark. "We never really talked about the record, " said Hardrocker men's head coach Jason Henry (fourth season). "It's something that our guys might have known about, but we are just there to play basketball --- win or lose. It is nice to keep winning and tie a record that is almost 20 years old. It's a cool thing." Saturday's game proved to be one of the most physically demanding games for the Hardrockers. In the contest, both teams combined for 51 fouls. Chadron State went to the foul line 26 times and converted 21 free throws for 80 percent, while the Hardrockers went 25-42 for 59 percent from the line. "They were plenty aggressive, " Henry said. "But I feel we stepped it up to another level. We were more intense and physical. That will help when we hit the road (this) weekend." Despite the intense play and pressure from the Eagles, SD Mines was able to establish a 12-point lead at halftime, 47-35. Photo by Brad Blume. "Our defensive effort was very good at times tonight, " Henry said. "They are a great team at dribbling and driving through the gaps. I thought we did a great job of keeping them out of those gaps and stopped them from penetrating too much." Individually for the Hardrockers, sophomore AJ Trennepohl (Lubbock, Texas) led all scorers in the game with a 21-point performance. Trennepohl connected on 5-8 from the behind the arch to pace the ‘Rockers. Teammate Robbie Fedor (junior from Monticello, Minn.) also had an outstanding night with 16 markers from the perimeter while junior Carl Johnson (Rapid City, S.D.) made his presence known underneath the hoop with 10 points. "Kaleb (Rehmer) (sophomore from Gillette, Wyo.) did a great job (Saturday) and was aggressive for us and AJ hit some big shots but it was truly a team effort, " Henry said. "We hit our shots and followed the scouting report on the Eagles." For Chadron, Tim McLaurin put up 17 points to lead his team while teammates Kevin McClelland and Moula Tautuaa both chipped in 12. Next up, the Hardrocker dive back into Dakota Athletic Conference play and will get a real test this coming weekend making their first visit to North Dakota to face Minot State (Friday) and Dickinson State (Saturday). "Chadron is that type of team that will prepare us for our next big test – Minot State, " Henry said. "Winning also helps in that process. People are starting to figure out their roles." Eagles cruise to win over Lady Hardrockers By the Chadron State College Information Office CHADRON, Neb. — Sunni Busch scored a game-high 24 points and three other Eagles reached double figures as the Chadron State women's basketball team cruised to an 89-61 victory over South Dakota School of Mines on Sunday afternoon in Chadron in an exhibition bout. Busch, who made 9-of-14 shots from the field, also grabbed nine rebounds to pace the Eagles. Alyssa Lyman added 15 points, Kristy Long scored 14 points, dished out seven assists and had six steals, and Kelsey Scott finished with 13 points. With the win, CSC snaps its three-game losing skid and improves to 5-6 on the season. The Eagles will play a non-conference game against Johnson and Wales tonight at 7:30 p.m. in Denver. In the fast-paced first half, Chadron State jumped out to an 8-2 lead in the opening minutes, but the Hardrockers weathered the hot start and went on a 21-10 run to take a 23-18 advantage with 10:45 remaining. However, the Eagles didn't go away and ended the half on a 23-6 run, gaining a 41-29 lead. In the second half, South Dakota Mines cut the Eagles��� lead to 69-57 with four minutes remaining, but Lyman and Long hit back-to-back 3-pointers, extending the lead to 75-57. After the consecutive treys, CSC outscored Mines 14-4 down the stretch to claim the victory. Sophomore Jerika Ihnen (Tea, S.D.) led South Dakota Mines with 11 points, Bethany Holyoak (junior from Moorcroft, Wyo.) added 10 while senior Jessica Tsingine (Tuba City, Ariz.) and sophomore Loryn Schuetzle (sophomore) both cashed in for nine markers. The Hardrockers overall record falls to 6-11 on the season and will now resume the Dakota Athletic Conference schedule with the squad's first trip to North Dakota of the season with stops this weekend at Minot State (Friday) and Dickinson State (Saturday). The Hardrocker women are currently on top of the DAC standings with a 2-0 mark. Holyoak earns DAC Player of the Week honors RAPID CITY --- South Dakota School of Mines women's basketball star Bethany Holyoak was named the Dakota Athletic Player of the Week on Monday for her outstanding performance this past week when the Lady Hardrockers traveled to California to compete in the Menlo College Classic. The Hardrockers played Menlo, Holy Names University and then took on Dominican University during the stint. Holyoak, a junior Industrial Engineering major from Moorcroft Wyoming tallied 61 points, 31 rebounds five assists, three blocks and was 31-36 on free throws for 86 percent accuracy. |
