Women's Basketball The SDM women's hoops team had a very challenging weekend hosting the Lady Beavers on Friday and the Lady Blue Hawks Saturday afternoon. Friday's game was a nail biter for both squads with Minot taking the advantage late in the contest and ending with the win, 82-79. Both teams seemed to mirror each other down the stretch and in the game both squads shot 47 percent from the field. The Hardrockers sank 31 of 66 shots while the Beavers dropped 30 of 64. Minot did make eight three-pointers to SDM's two. The Beavers held a four-point edge at the half, 38-34, but the ‘Rockers outscored the visitors, 45-44, in the second period. Individually, senior All American and two-time conference MVP Melanie Vedvei (Lake Preston, S.D.) led the Hardrockers with 23 points. Vedvei would leave the game in the waning minutes after sustaining a knee injury. Sophomore Bethany Holyoak (Moorcroft, Wyo.) had a good effwith 20 points while senior Jennie Malone (Rapid City, S.D.) cashed infor 14 and freshman Jerika Ihnen(Tea, S.D.) added 13 mark Freshman Whitney Ashford squares up on the baseline and looks to sink a shot last Saturday vs. Dickinson State. The Hardrockers led at the half, 35-18, but then saw the Blue Hawks swoop in and score 53 points in the second half to SDM's 31 as Dickinson won the bout, 71-66. Holyoak again played well under the basket, leading all scorers with 24 markers. Ihnen also played well with a 19-point effort. The two losses gives the Hardrockers a 16-5 record for the season and 4-3 in conference play and also drops them to fourth in the DAC rankings. The Lady Rockers won't have long to wait to exact their revenge on their opponents from last week as this Friday's games pits SDM against The Blue Hawks in Dickinson, N.D., and Saturday Mines travels to Minot, N.D., for a rematch with the Lady Beavers. Men's Basketball The SD Mines mens hoops squad earned a split over the weekend with a win over Minot State Friday followed by a tough loss to Dickinson State Saturday at the King Center. Friday's game proved to be highly competitive. After enjoying a somewhat comfortable lead for a majority of the game, the Hardrockers were able to stave off a late rally from the Minot State Beavers and hold on for an 87-86 victory "It was a huge win for us, " said Hardrocker head coach Jason Henry. "We are sitting in a good spot (in the conference). Minot came in as the No. 1 team in the DAC." It was an all around effort for the Hardrockers as five SDM players reached double figures in the bout. Freshman A.J. Trennepohl (Lubbock, Texas) led the way with 20 points (6 of 9 from three-point line), followed by 14 markers from junior Donny DeGooyer (Great Falls, Mont.) and freshman Brent Cass (Hereford, Colo.). Junior Brandon Smith (Amenia, N.D.) contributed for the ‘Rockers with a 13-point effort. "It's been like that all season long. We don't have one guy (to rely on) --- it's a team effort, " Henry said. "Brandon Smith wasn't even going to play (Friday) and then goes in for a couple minutes and hits six of six and ended up scoring 13 for us." The Hardrockers shot an impressive 60 percent from the field, hitting 16-28, while Minot kept pace going 15-26 for 58 percent. They shot the three very well, " Henry said of Minot. "They are so good offensively. Then we shoot 60 percent. I think you have a chance to win anytime you can do that." SDM sophomore Robbie Fedor lets one fly from long range during Friday's game against Minot State. Individually, Trennepohl led in scoring for SDM, dropping in 14 points while sophomore Robbie Fedor (Monticello, Minn.) contributed with 13, Cass added nine and junior Donny DeGooyer chipped in eight. After this past weekend's game, the Hardrockers record stands at 6-15 on the season and 3-4 in the conference, ranking them fifth in the standings. The SD Mines men turn right around and face off with Dickinson this Friday followed by a rematch with Minot Saturday. |
