| Transcript | By Brad Blume Sports Information Director South Dakota School of Mines RAPID CITY --- The South Dakota School of Mines men's basketball program may be in the middle of its 2008-09 campaign, but the Hardrockers are already looking to strengthen next season's roster signing the team's first recruit this past weekend at the King Center in Rapid City. The SD Mines men's basketball team and Hardrocker men's head coach Jason Henry are pleased to announce the signing of Hot Springs standout Blake McPherson to the program for the 2009-10 season. "Blake is a great student athlete and a great fit for our program, " Henry said. "The things we liked about Blake when we were recruiting him were his size and his athleticism. He's got a frame that he can add weight to. He's not skinny but he still needs to fill out some." McPherson is an exceptional athlete that is having an outstanding year for the Bison. A 6-foot-6-inch wing player, McPherson, individually, is one of the top players in the Black Hills Conference, dominating on both ends of the court. "He's had a few big games against some of the top teams in the Black Hills Conference. He is definitely a kid that catches your eye when he gets 21 rebounds against Custer or when he scores 25 points and gets 17 rebounds against St. Thomas More, " Henry said. "He's playing against very good, well-coached teams and is still getting his double-doubles." Henry added the McPherson is averaging nearly 23 points a game this season and is securing close to 16 rebounds each time out. "He's very athletic and he shoots the ball very well, " Henry added. Along with excelling at basketball, McPherson is also a National Honor Society Member, a student government class representative, Fellowship of Christian Athletes member, Youth Alive member, and active in the Hot Springs Wesleyan Church and Youth group. "It's always nice to get good local talent to come to the School of Mines, " Henry said. "I'm excited to have another local guy on the team that we think can help us." The Hot Springs boys team is currently 3-5 on the season and has had a tough go of it the last couple of seasons. Henry feels that McPherson may is a little under-the-radar and that the Hardrockers grabbed a high quality kid that has a lot of potential. While attending SD Mines, McPherson is planning to study engineering.
