St. Joseph Street • Rapid City, SD 57701- 3995 Phone: ( 605) 394- 6082/ 2554 • Fax: ( 605) 394- 6177 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: ( July 16, 1997) SANDSTON RESIDENT DIGS FOR JURASSIC- ERA DINOSAUR FOSSILS WITH SOUTH DAKOTA PALEONTOLOGISTS David Cordes of Sandston is spending part of his summer digging for Jurassic- era dinosaur fossils with paleontologists from the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology ( SDSM& T) in Rapid City, South Dakota. Cordes is receiving hands- on, in- the- field fossil digging experience at an important paleontological site near Sundance, Wyoming. The excavation is directed by Dr. James Martin, Curator of Vertebrate Paleontology for the SDSM& T Museum of Geology. The scientific excavation at this site has yielded Jurassic- era fossils from Camarasaurus and Allosaurus, as well as tiny primitive mammals. At this site SDSM& T paleontologists have discovered the jaw of a very primitive mammal unlike any which has been previously found. The excavation this summer is focusing on the " fishing pole" neck of Camarasaurus, whose skeleton SDSM& T scientists been excavating the past four years. SDSM& T's field paleontology program attracts students, teachers and others from across the nation each summer. The public can participate on a limited, space- available basis. The SDSM& T Museum of Geology is a research and teaching museum with extensive exhibits of minerals and fossil collections.
