| Transcript | By Brad Blume Sports Information Director South Dakota School of Mines Women's Basketball RAPID CITY--- The South Dakota School of Mines women's basketball team played two solid teams this past weekend where they were able to defeat the, then, No. 4 ranked Jamestown College Jimmies Friday night at the King Center before falling to a scrappy Valley City State Viking squad Saturday afternoon. The Hardrockers looked good from start to finish against the Lady Jimmies, surging in the second half to win the Dakota Athletic Conference bout, 67-58. "It was a complete game. I think it was the first one we've played (in awhile), " said Lady Hardrocker head coach Barb Felderman. "We played very hard, very intelligently and very well for 40 minutes --- offensively and defensively." SD Mines shot 40 percent from the field while the Jimmies were a dismal 29 percent. The ‘Rockers edged Jamestown at the half, 33-31 and then outscored the visitors in the second half, 34-27. Individually the Hardrockers had three women reach double figures. Junior Bethany Holyoak (Moorcroft, Wyo.) continues to add to her stellar season, leading SDM with 13 points, 12 rebounds and three blocks. Jerika Ihnen (sophomore from Tea, S.D.) and Ariel Granillo (freshman from Chandler, Ariz.) both chipped in 11 points. "We had a lot of help from a lot of different people, " Felderman added of her players. "Leah Sundby and Nicole Martin came off the bench and really helped us out as did Stephanie Bjustrom." On Saturday, the Lady ‘Rockers ran into a very underrated Valley City State team. The game proved to be a back-and-forth battle with the Vikings breaking away late in the contest. The visitors escaped with a 74-62 victory over the ‘Rockers. "I think fatigue had something to do with it, " Felderman said about the loss. "When that sets in, it allows for (opponents) to penetrate and kick (the ball out) and puts them in scoring position." SD Mines led after the first half, 38-35, but got outscored down the stretch as the Vikings posted 39 points in the second period to SDM's 24. The Hardrockers shot 38 percent from the field while the Vikings made 46 percent of their baskets. "They shot very well and we hurt us with our passes and turnovers. They were the type that yielded two points for them and took two away from us, " Felderman added. Individually, Sundby paced the ���Rockers with 14 points, while Holyoak added 12 markers and sophomore Loryn Schuetzle recorded a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds for the game. Photo by Brad Blume SDM women knock off No. 4 Jamestown With the split the Lady Hardrockers' record now stands at 7-14 for the year and 3-4 in the DAC and a tie for fifth place. Next up Mines makes the dreaded trip to Mayville State and Dakota State this weekend (the longest conference road trip of the season). SD Mines takes on the Comets Friday in Mayville, N.D. and the Lady T's Saturday in Madison, S.D. Men's Basketball RAPID CITY --- The South Dakota School of Mines men's basketball team had a very intense, a very exciting and a very productive weekend as the Hardrockers defended their home court to win two Dakota Athletic Conference games at the King Center in Rapid City. "The Hardrocker had two big wins this weekend and they were at home, " said Hardrocker head coach Jason Henry. SD Mines defeated the Jamestown Jimmies, 72-54, thanks to a second half scoring charge. The game was knotted at 32 after the first 20 minutes and then SDM outscored JC, 40-22, in the second frame. "We played very well defensive wise. We did a lot of good things offensively as well, but defense was definitely the key to that game, " Henry said. Individually AJ Trennepohl (sophomore from Lubbock, Texas) paced the Hardrockers with 14 points on the night while Robbie Fedor (junior from Monticello, Minn.) and Scott May (Sophomore from Aurora, Colo.) both contributed with 12 markers. "Scott May had a great game. He scored in double figures and ran the show well for us, " Henry said. "Our posts played pretty well in that game defending John Peabody who is a very good player for Jamestown and in the conference." The Valley City game was a tad more exciting ---similar to a roller coaster ride. Each side exchanged the lead throughout the 40 minutes of play with the Hardrockers coming out on top at the end, 66-65. Fedor drove the lane and made a layup with just under three ticks left in the game. Valley City attempted a 35-footer that just rimmed out to give the Hardrockers their second win in-a-row. Valley City held the halftime advantage, 35- 32, but SDM outscored the visitors, 34-30, to set up the dramatic finish. Saturday's game saw a lot of heroes from several individuals as four ‘Rockers breached double digits. Senior Brandon Smith (Amenia, N.D.) led all scorers with 17 points including two dunks on the night --- one, a reverse dunk that erupted Goodell Gymnasium. Trennepohl was solid with 12 points while Fedor and Nate Jacobson (freshman from Rapid City, S.D.) both chipped in 10 markers. The two wins give SD Mines a 15-6 record on the season and 3-2 mark in DAC action. "They were two big wins for the Hardrockers and it keeps us alive for the conference championship. Next up is Mayville State and Dakota State this weekend. Indoor Track SPEARFISH --- The South Dakota School of Mines men's and women��s track team officially started the 2009 indoor season this past Friday at the Dave Little Invitational in Spearfish. The Hardrockers found some success right out of the blocks as freshman Jamie Dale (Alpine, Calif.) set a new SDM school record in the long jump after a leap of 22-feet-5.25 inches. The old record was 22-1 held by Jeremy Holter. "We were very pleased with what Jamie Dale got done. He broke a school record in the indoor long jump that has stood since 1991. We were pleased with his jump, " said Hardrocker head track coach Jerry Schafer. "He got (the record) on his first jump and then he injured a hamstring on his sixth jump and wasn't able to continue in the meet." Dale handily won the event and was less than an inch from provisionally qualifying for the NAIA National Indoor Championships. The injury doesn't appear to be too serious and Dale should be back in action in no time. It was also a personal best mark for Dale. "We are disappointed that he got hurt but excited to see what he will accomplish through the course of the year, " Schafer said. Senior Jason Simmons set two personal best marks in the 55- meter dash and the 200 dash. The New Underwood native earned third place in the 200 after clocking a time of 23.66 seconds and then finished sixth in the 55 Dash with a time of 7.20. "We are really excited about his development this year, " Schafer added. Also earning personal best marks at Friday's meet were: Lucas Fried (sophomore from Kodiak, Ala.) in both the mile and the 3K. events. In the mile, Fried took sixth in a time of 4:34.03 and then grabbed fifth in the 3, 000 after posting a time of 9:34.85. Sophomore Everett Brill also improved his best mark in the weight throw by three feet. Brill took sixth in the event after a toss of 45-4.5 Junior Colton Reid also had a stellar performance, finishing third in the 1, 000 with a time of 2:43.00. "It's good to see where we are at with the team and the areas where we need to work a little harder, " said Schafer. "Getting this first one out of the way is good because it gives us a point to work from." On the women's side, junior Ashley Stewart (Scotland, S.D.) gave a solid performance in the high jump, taking second place after clearing 4-11, sophomore Brittney Hovdenes had a solid run in both the 800 and 1, 600 races. In the 800, the Rapid City native secured fourth in a time of 2:34.81 and then came in sixth during the mile, posting a 5:42.95. Fellow sophomore Kendra Crisman (Rapid City) also performed well in the 600 with a fourth-place finish (1:49.06) before injuring herself in the 1, 000 --- and still managed a fifth-place showing (3:26.93. "Our women are a little dinged up, �� Schafer said. "Most of our work on that side of the team is getting people healthy and headed in the right direction." Next up, the Hardrockers travel down to Chadron Friday for the Eagle Twilight Meet. "It gives us a chance to correct some of the things we didn't do so well at this weekend, " Schafer added.
