| Transcript | By Brad Blume Sports Information Director South Dakota School of Mines RAPID CITY --- The South Dakota School of Mines women's volleyball team accomplished something this past weekend that the Lady Hardrockers haven't done in more than a decade --- defeat the Dickinson State Lady Blue Hawks. Never has Mines won a match over the empowered Hawks since the inception of the DAC eight years and running. DSU has had a strangle hold over the league winning every DAC regular season crown. "It's nice to be the coach that did, however I am happier for the girls and the seniors especially, " said Hardrocker head coach Beth Honaker. "It's nice to have the monkey off our back because now we know we can beat them." The SD Mines women won the Dakota Athletic Conference match Friday night, 3-1, at the King Center in Rapid City to improve to 11-10 on the season and 3-5 in the conference. The Hardrockers defeated Dickinson, 25-20, 27-25, 19-25, 25-18. Individually, junior Katherine Hanson (Sioux Falls, S.D.) was on fire, recording an impressive 22 kills and was 32-40 on the attack while conference leading killer, Ashley Kauffman (Fort Morgan, Colo.) followed with 8 kills and was 48-56 on the attack. Senior Renae Keppen (Dakota Dunes, S.D.) was a big factor at the net for the Hardrockers with five assisted blocks and one solo. Senior libero Jenny Hiykel (Omaha, Neb.) was outstanding with 24 digs and setter Renanna Roberson(Fort Collins, Colo.) had five service aces on the night. On Saturday, the Hardrockers squared off against the Minot State Lady Beavers and despite a convincing win in the first game, lost the three following sets and lose the match, 3-1. Minot Stated defeated SDM, 21-25, 31-29, 26-24, 25-18. ��We struggled on offense a lot. We just couldn't seem to get anything rolling, Honaker said. "Normally for us on balls that would have gone down, Minot State was able to dig them and our girls weren't able to change things up or adapt very well." Individually for the ‘Rockers, Kauffman tallied 13 kills and went 35-43 on the attack and had 19 digs, two solo blocks and an assisted block. Hanson had another big outing with 10 kills and was 30-39 on the attack and collected 17 digs. Hiykel paced the team with 26 digs. With the weekend split the Hardrockers are back at.500 with an 11-11 overall record and are 3-6 in DAC play. We missed a lot of serves that we didn't on Friday night. We just dug ourselves into a hole and couldn't get out, " the coach added. SDM makes a final road trip to North Dakota this weekend traveling to Jamestown College Friday to take on the Jimmies and then Valley City Saturday to face the Vikings. Football Minot, N.D. --- The South Dakota School of Mines continues to make waves in the Dakota Athletic Conference as the Hardrockers gave the Minot State Beavers all they could handle Saturday in Minot. Unfortunatley the Beavers were able to swing momentum in the second half of play and win the conference bout, 25-16. The loss drops the ‘Rockers to 4-3 on the season and 2-2 in the DAC. "We are so close to be where we want to be, " said Hardrocker head coach Dan Kratzer. "We had lots of opportunities but just couldn't get it done. The game went back and forth all day. The Beavers got on the board first with a four-yard touchdown run from Nick Banks at the beginning of the first quarter (PAT no good), but later in the period SDM sophomore Justin Whalin connected on a 23-yard field goal followed by a touchdown from freshman quarterback Nick Russell on a one-yard keeper early in the second stanza. The extra point was no good, but the Hardrockers took the 9-6 advantage. The Beavers took the edge before the half with another Banks score, followed by a Beaver field goal at the half to give Minot a 15-9 lead. But again SDM had an answer when Russell hooked up with junior tight end Jason Beilstein for a eight-yard TD reception early in the third quarter, giving the Hardrockers a 16-15 tilt. But Minot added another touchdown at the end of the period and sealed the deal with a field goal at the end of the second half. "We had opportunities early in the game, " said Hardrocker heads football coach Dan Kratzer. "We had three turnovers (in the first half) that we turned into nine points. In an ideal word you get 21 points off turnovers, but we aren't in that ideal word just yet. We had a field goal, a missed field goal and turned the third turnover into a touchdown but missed the extra point." The defense came up big on a number of plays for the Hardrockers, intercepting four passes, had four pass breakups and had 10 tackles for a loss of 18 yards. Sophomore defensive back Tom Lunzman (Grentna, Neb.) tallied two INT's on the day and returned them 93 yards while freshman defensive backs Josh Sherman (Coleman, S.D.) and Eric Yeash each record one pick. Senior defensive end Colton Clark (Worland, Wyo.) led the ‘Rockers in tackles with 14 including two for a loss as well as a pass breakup while Sherman had 10 also posting two for a loss. Another big factor in the game was Minot's fear of the Hardrockers' special teams. The Beavers kicked every punt away from SDM's return men on punts and were able to keep things somewhat in contol on kickoffs. SD Mines is currently rated first in the nation in punt return yardage and ninth in kickoff return. "In the transitional game we didn't get that edge that we normally had, " Kratzer said. "The kicked the ball away from us and it was an effective job of controlling our special teams." Minot's defense was pretty much able to keep SDM freshman running back Jamie Dale (Alpine, Calif.) in check the whole game. Dale netted 34 yards on 15 carries, but did tally 78 yards on five reception including snapping off a 55 yarder for the longest play of the day. Russell was again limited as well, completing 20-31 passes for 195 yards and one interception while being sacked three times. Things don't get any easier for the Hardrockers as they will welcome Dickinson State to Dunham Field Saturday for a 1 p.m. DAC matchup. The Blue Hawks upset BHSU this past week to climb into first place in the conference standings. Cross Country RAPID CITY --- After a three-week layoff, the South Dakota School of Mines men's and women's cross country teams eased back into the season with a small home meet with the Black Hills State Yellow Jackets along with a few other individuals held at Robbinsdale Park in Rapid City. The Yellow Jackets team were both ranked nationally and it proved to be a great way to get both the ‘Rocker men's and women's teams back up to speed. "We had a dual against our archrivals who are (nationally) ranked – not sure if we really eased back into it, " said Hardrocker head cross country coach Jerry Schafer. "Our kids were ready to run and they did a good job of competing." In the women's race (5K) BHSU's Shelli Scheffler was the event winner clocking a time of 20 minutes and 35.38 seconds but Lady Hardrocker sophomores Brittney Hovdenes and Kendra Crisman (both of Rapid City, S.D.) were close behind. Hovdenes took second with a mark of 20:42.89 and bettered last year's mark on the course by over a minute while Crisman posted a time of 20:50.52 for third and was 54 ticks improved over last year. As for the rest of the SDM squad, senior Jessie Chretien took ninth (Rapid City, S.D.) with a 24:49.18 which was about a two-minute improvement from last year, freshman Kelsey Feist (Deadwood, S.D.) was 10th in a time of 26:04.96 and newcomer Kendall Donegan earned 11th with a time of 26:25.60. "The women ran very well considering (they were running) on of of the more challenging courses in the upper midwest." The same thing happened on the men's side. The race (8K) was won by Bird Haraden of BHSU after clocking the winning time of 28:04.78 and then teammate Jed Morgan was the runner-up with a time of 28:18.84. Sophomore Lucus Fried (Kodiak, Ala.) finished third with a mark of 28:22.08 and freshman Matt Pike was close behind for fourth place with a 28:29.17.
