And both teams suffered tough losses to the Beavers and Blue Hawks. In other news, the SD Mines football program is already looking ahead to the start of the 2009 season as the Hardrockers have inked the first quality recruits for the year. Men's Basketball NORTH DAKOTA --- The South Dakota School of Mines men's basketball team had a lot of momentum heading into the weekend as the Hardrockers faced the Dakota Athletic Conferences two toughest opponents in the Minot State Beavers and the Dickinson State Blue Hawks. SD Mines was riding an 11-game winning streak that tied a 17-year-old school record and a No. 21 ranking in last week's NAIA Top 25 Coaches poll. The Beavers snapped the streak for the Hardrockers, defeating SDM, 69-59. After holding a two-point edge at the half, 30-28, Minot was able to breakaway late in the second period, outscoring the ‘Rockers, 39-31, to earn the victory. "Minot was a different kind of team for us, " said Hardrocker men's basketball head coach Jason Henry. "They pressed us the entire game. They get you hurried up and scrambling around. I thought we handled it okay, but it just made us play in a hurry. We haven't really seen (pressure) at all this season --- especially at that level. That is (Minot's) bread and butter." The Hardrockers saw just two players breach double figures. Both Robbie Fedor (junior from Monticello, Minn.) and Kaleb Rehmer (sophomore from Cheyenne, Wyo.) both posted 11 points. Junior Kyle Turpin (Post Falls, Ida.) added seven markers from SD Mines and sophomore Scott May (Aurora, Colo.) put in 5 points. "Like I said we handled their press pretty well, we just couldn't get slowed back down, " Henry added. "Physically, we played well and the guys gave 100 percent and really worked their tails off." Hoops team swept on road; SDM football get jump on 2009 The Hardrockers were hoping to rebound Saturday vs. Dickinson State, but the Blue Hawks had other ideas as they edged SD Mines by six, 56-50. In that contest, the Hardrockers enjoyed a two-point advantage at halftime, 28-26, but the Hawks came alive in the second half, outscoring the visitors, 30-22. Like the previous night, only two Hardrockers reached double digits. Sophomore sharpshooter AJ Trennepohl (Lubbock, Texas) led the way with a 12-point performance while Rapid City native Carl Johnson (junior) cashed in for 11 points. "Dickinson was a really physical team, " Henry said. "They made you earn every shot attempt and really made us grind it out." Henry added that free throws may have contributed to the outcome against the Blue Hawks as the Hardrockers converted just seven of 17 in the second half. "Free throws were a huge difference, " Henry said. "When you do everything right and they foul us and we come away with no points --- we can't afford to let that happen." The two losses drops the Hardrockers from first to fourth in the DAC standings as SD Mines has a 13-5 overall record and now 2-2 in conference play. Individually, Trennepohl is currently fifth in the league in scoring (averaging 13.56 points a game) while May climbed to third in total assists (64). Next up the SD Mines men welcome long-time rival Black Hills State to the King Center Thursday in a 7:30 p.m. tip-off. Women's Basketball NORTH DAKOTA --- The South Dakota School of Mines women's basketball team had another tough weekend playing two Dakota Athletic Conference opponents on the road as the Lady Hardrockers fell to the Minot State Beavers, 75-61, on Friday and then lost a heartbreaker to Dickinson State on a buzzer-beater, 59-58, Saturday afternoon. Against the Beavers, SD Mines looked very solid over the first 20 minutes as each team posted 30 points at the break. Minot however was able to break the stalemate in the second half, outscoring the ‘Rockers, 43-29. Individually, the Hardrockers were paced by sophomore Loryn Schuetzle (Pierre, S.D.) who cashed in for 15 points followed by junior standout Bethany Holyoak (Moorcroft, Wyo.) and freshman Ariel Granillo Lady Hardrocker Jerika Ihnen soars through the lane and goes up for a layup during a game last month against Mayville State at the King Center in Rapid City. The Lady ‘Rockers had a real opportunity to win the bout, but a late turnover that was converted into two points followed by the final buzzer sealed the Hardrockers' fate and handed the visitors their fifth-straight defeat.
