Men's Basketball The Hardrocker men's hoop team had a difficult weekend, coming up short in both outings. Valle City State had the best record in the conference currently and added to its win total, defeating SD Mines, 69-52. The ‘Rockers responded well in Saturday's contest, and took arguably the DAC's best team to the wire as the Jimmies eked out a buzzer beating victory, 67-66, over SDM. Valley City outscored SD Mines, 37-23 at the half, and held a 32-29 edge in the second half to keep the Hardrockers at bay. Individually, the Hardrockers saw some good performances from freshmen Brent Cass (Hereford, Colo.) and Michael Ross (Fort Worth, Texas). Cass, making his first start of his college career, dished in 14 points to pace the ‘Rockers, while Ross contributed with 10. Junior Donny DeGooyer grabbed 7 rebounds to lead Mines and Ross had the most assists with six. On Saturday, what looked to be an exciting and dramatic finish for the South Dakota School of Mines turned into a heartbreaking and disappointing loss as Jamestown College squeaked out a last-second win, 67-66, during Dakota Athletic Conference play. Trailing by two points with just three second to play, Jimmies' senior Jordan Olson took an inbounds pass, squared up at the top of the key and drained a three-point basket as the final buzzer sounded. "Jamestown did what they needed to do to win the game, " said Hardrocker head coach Jason Henry. "That was a heck of a shot. It was just a senior making the play." What really stung for the ‘Rockers is just seconds early at the other end, freshman A.J. Trennepohl (Lubbock, Texas) drained what appeared to be a three-pointer with just under 10 ticks to play, which would have put the home team up by three points. On a controversial call, the basket was recorded as two points, giving SD Mines only a two-point edge, 66-64, before setting up the intense and emotional ending. "We will have to go back and look at that play, " Henry said. "Even one of the officials called it a three, but it was waved off. There is not a lot you can do about it." The loss drops the Hardrockers 4-13 (1-2 in DAC) on the season, while the Jimmies escape with a win and a 12-5 (2-1 in DAC) overall mark for the season. The defeat was also bitter sweet for SD Mines as Henry felt Jamestown College was the best team in league and his Hardrockers were still able to compete and give themselves an opportunity to come out on top. "I feel terrible for our kids, " Henry said. "They did what they needed to do to put them in a position to win that game. We played very well." SD Mines held a 33-30 edge at the half, but the Jimmies outscored the Hardrockers in the second period, 37-33. For the Hardrockers, Trennepohl had a tremendous game, leading the way with 24 points, including a 6 of 9 performance from behind the arc, while sophomore Robbie Fedor (Monticello, Minn.) and freshman Jordan Schmitz (Williston, N.D.) both dropped in nine points. The Hardrockers are on the road next weekend as they travel to North Dakota to square off with Mayville State Friday and Dakota State Saturday. Women's Basketball After earning the No. 13th NAIA national ranking this week, the South Dakota School of Mines women's basketball team backed it up with two conference wins at home Friday and Saturday, defeating both Valley City State and Jamestown College to improve to 14-3 overall on the season and 2-1 in Dakota Athletic Conference competition. The Lady ‘Rockers made short work of Valley City, winning the bout, 83-51, after jumping out to a 13-1 advantage to start the game. SD Mines led by 24 at halftime, 37-13 and the edge the Vikings in the second half, 46-38. The Rockers shot 49 percent from the field, converting on 16 of 30 while Valley City' shooting percentage was just 26 percent, draining 17 of 65 from the field. Individually, the Hardrockers saw four athletes reach double digits in scoring. Senior Jennie Malone (Rapid City, S.D.) paced SDM with a 16-point effort, while fellow senior Melanie Vedvei (Lake Preston, S.D.) added 13 markers and was very, very close to recording a triple-double. She had nine steals and nine assists in the ball game as well. Freshman Jerika Ihnen (Tea, S.D.) and junior Jessica Tsingine (Tuba City, Ariz.) both added 12 points. Sophomore Nicole Martin (Missoula, Mont.) collected the most rebounds for Mines with six. Saturday's game was a touch more competitive as the Jimmies threw everything they had at the Lady ‘Rockers. It was a pretty intense battle, but the Hardrockers used a late scoring surge to distance themselves from Jamestown to earn the ‘W' by nine points, 56-45. The first half was a defensive stalemate as the ‘Rockers took a six-point halftime lead, 22-19 and then outscored Jamestown, 34-29 in the second stanza. Vedvei had another stellar outing, marking up 26 points to lead all scorers along with six more steals. The Industrial Engineering major is currently just over 1, 900 points scored as a Hardrocker and is just six steals away from owning the NAIA national career steals record. Vedvei right now has 407. She also earned her third DAC Player of the Week honor after her play this past weekend. Track and Field A week after setting a new school indoor pole vaulting record, South Dakota School of Mines senior Chandler Caldwell earned a sixth-place finish at the Air Force Academy All Comers Indoor Meet in Colorado Springs, Colo., after clearing a height of 15-feet-1-inch. The Thornton, Colo., native broke his own school record last week after vaulting 15-7 at a high powered meet in Reno, Nev. As for the rest of the Hardrocker track team, they resume practice this week and have a full-team meet at the end of January. A small contingent will also go to a meet in Vermillion this weekend as well. |
