| Transcript | 'Rocker thinclads have solid improvement at Minot State Open By Brad Blume Sports Information Director Minot, N.D. --- The South Dakota School of Mines braved the great-white-north with a weekend trip to Minot, N.D. this past Saturday for the Minot State Open where the Hardrocker thinclads posted some impressive times and bettered a number of personal and season-best marks. The „Rockers improved on two personal-best records (PR) and posted nine new season-best marks. SD Mines sophomore Everett Brill (Elko, Nev.) not only improved a season-best distance in the hammer throw, he broke his own school record after a throw of 145-feet-4-inches. The toss also earned him the event title. "Everett Brill is really starting to take off in the hammer throw, " said Hardrocker track head coach Jerry Schafer. "He seems to get better every week. And if he doesn‟t improve his marks are still consistent from the prior week. He is a real student of the sport. Everett tries to learn everything he can." Mines sophomore Brittany Hovdenes (Rapid City) had a PR in the 1, 500-meter run, clocking a time of 5 minutes 7.25 seconds which netted her third in the event. The other PR came from Matt Pike (freshman from Winnemucca, Nev.) who took second place in the 10, 000 run in a time of 34:59.1. Hardrocker Colton Reid delivered a strong performance in the 800 run, taking first place in the event with a time of 1:58.83 which was a season best mark for the red-shirt junior from Colstrip, Mont. Other season-best times from Hardrockers included: Jason Simmons (senior from New Underwood, S.D.) took third in the 200 dash (22.97); freshman Jamie Dale (Alpine, Calif.) was sixth in the 200 dash clocking a 23.36; Blake James (freshman from Friendswood, Texas) earned third in the 1, 500 with a mark of 4:19.71; Thomas Everett (freshman from Missoula, Mont.) placed third in the 5, 000 run in a time of 16:37.71; Lucas Fried (sophomore from Kodiak, Ala.) was awarded second in the 3, 000 steeple chase clocking a 10:00.31; Laurette Beal (freshman from Big Springs, Neb.) cleared a height of 8-0 in the pole vault which gave her second place; and Madi Lane (freshman from Fort Collins, Colo.) took second in the high jump after a jump of 5-1. "I was really impressed with how all the kids battled for places, " Schafer said. "Not only did a number of the times improve, but the competitiveness was also there and that‟s nice to see this time of year." The Hardrockers will next see action this coming Saturday traveling to Colorado for the Jack Christensen Invite in Boulder, Colo. "The Christensen Invite has always been a big meet with competitive athletes – both collegian and post collegian, " Schafer said. "Going to this meet gives our athletes an opportunity to see some of the top level competition and for (the Hardrockers) to expire toward that. It also a good opportunity to get our seed marks for the DAC Meet. It challenges our kids to step up." |
