TranscriptBy Brad Blume Sports Information Director South Dakota School of Mines RAPID CITY --- The South Dakota School of Mines women's track program received another significant upgrade with the addition of new recruit Katelyn Kieffer who recently signed a letter of intent and will become a Lady Hardrocker in the fall of 2009. Kieffer is an exceptional track athlete with an interesting background story. Listing her hometown as Lodz, Poland, Kieffer is currently attending high school at the Black Forest Academy in Kandern, Germany. She recently ended her high school track career after competing at the European Finals in Russelsheim, Germany. The BFA athletes compete against schools on military bases across Germany. During the track meet, Kieffer competed in four events, the long jump, 400- and 200-meter dashes and the 4x400 relay. She also is an intermediate hurdler but did not race in that event during the European Finals. Kieffer won the long jump event after a leap of 16-feet-6.75-inches; took second in dramatic fashion during the 400 dash, clocking a time of 59.64 seconds, missing first place by one hundredth of a second; and finished fourth the 200 dash, posting a time of 26.6. "Katelyn is a quality athlete that will have a huge impact on our program right away, " said Hardrocker head track coach Jerry Schafer. "Her versatility and talent will make the Hardrocker women a more competitive team next year." Kieffer's time in the 400 was a personal-best mark and also the first time she has broken 60 seconds. Her best time in the 200 is a 26.18, which would have earned her the title during the European Finals. "We believe Katelyn has the potential to compete on the National stage in the near future, " Schafer added. While attending SD School of Mines Kieffer plans to major in Chemical Engineering. The South Dakota School of Mines and Technology has a proud heritage of preparing graduates to serve as leaders in engineering and science. At the School of Mines every student has the opportunity to participate in research and test classroom learning through hands-on experience.
