St. Joseph Street • Rapid City, SD 57701- 3995 Phone: ( 605) 394- 6082/ 2554 • Fax: ( 605) 394- 6177 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: ( September 2, 1997) MATHIOWETZ CHILDREN TAKE PART IN SIMULATED FOSSIL DIG AND TAKE SDSM& T'S MINI- INDY CAR FOR AN IMAGINARY TEST DRIVE During a recent visit to Storybook Island in Rapid City, SD this summer, Brett, Rachel and Chad Mathiowetz of Sleepy Eye had a chance to take part in a simulated paleontology dig and other hands- on Museum in Motion science and engineering exhibits sponsored by the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology ( SDSM& T). They are the children of Brian and Ronda Mathiowetz of Sleepy Eye. The South Dakota School of Mines and Technology ( SDSM& T) was Storybook Island's Sponsor- For- A- Day when the Mathiowetz family visited the popular children's park in Rapid City. In addition to the Museum in Motion exhibits, SDSM& T also displayed its Mini- Indy, Mini- Baja, solar car, and concrete canoe that Tech students designed, built and raced in national competitions earlier this year. ++ 30++ Photo Caption # 1: Rachel, Chad and Brett Mathiowetz participate in a simulated paleontology dig sponsored by the SDSM& T Museum of Geology. The simulated dig features fossil casts from four geological ages commonly found in the Black Hills and Badlands area of western South Dakota. Photo Caption # 2: Chad Mathiowetz takes South Dakota Tech's Mini- Indy car for an imaginary test drive around the Storybook Island park in Rapid City. Earlier this year SDSM& T's Mini- Indy student team competed nationally against other universities with the vehicle that they designed and built.
