St. Joseph Street • Rapid City, SD 57701- 3995 Phone: ( 605) 394- 6082/ 2554 • Fax: ( 605) 394- 3388 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE ( April 8, 1997) SOUTH DAKOTA SPACE DAY ‘ 97 TO BE HELD APRIL 24 The South Dakota Space Grant Consortium ( SDSGC) is sponsoring the 3rd Annual South Dakota Space Day on April 24, 1997. Several members of the South Dakota Tech community will be participating in this year's program, which will be held in Sioux Falls at Augustana College and the EROS Data Center. The keynote speaker for South Dakota Space Day ' 97 will be Mike Mullane, NASA astronaut. Mullane will be introduced by Dr. Sherry Farwell, SDSM& T Dean of Graduate Education and Sponsored Programs and Director of the SDSGC. Other SDSM& T participants in this year's Space Day activities include Dr. James Fox, SDSM& T Professor of Geology & Geological Engineering, and Linda B. Allen, outreach coordinator for SDSGC and Science Linkages in the Community ( SLIC). The following SDSM& T students also will be taking part in Space Day ‘ 97: Melissa Boettcher of Sioux Falls, senior geology major; Scott Cooper of Black Hawk, senior geology major; Brian Herbst of Rapid City, mechanical engineering graduate student; and Kirk Opella of Casper, WY, mechanical engineering graduate student. 4700 students from South Dakota schools have pre- registered for the day- long activities, which will include hands- on educational experiences in math, science and technology. More than 35 exhibits will be available, including NASA's Johnson Space Center, Civil Air Patrol, South Dakota StarBase/ SD ANG, Federal Aviation Administration, EROS Data Center, SDSM& T, University of Nebraska, Augustana College, South Dakota State University, Lake Area Technical Institute, South Dakota Skydivers, Sioux Valley Hospital, and GLOBE ( Global Learning & Observations to Benefit the Environment). The goals of Space Day are to provide hands- on interactive demonstrations which will create excitement and interest in NASA, science, math, and engineering, and to create an awareness of the variety of resources which are available in the state to support these fields. Over 2000 students attended Space Day events in previous years, which were held in Pierre and Rapid City. For additional information, contact Linda B.
