Mike Mullane, NASA Astronaut, was the keynote speaker. Activities were held at Augustana College and the EROS Data Center. Space Day is sponsored by the South Dakota Space Grant Consortium ( SDSGC), comprised of SDSM& T, SDSU, Augustana College, EROS and NASA. StarBase of South Dakota co- sponsored the event with corporate sponsorship from Home Federal Bank and other Sioux Falls area businesses. Mullane gave 3 presentations on Thursday targeted to elementary, middle and high school students and emphasized the keys to reaching your dream: " Take Care of Your Body, Don't Give Up, and Stay in School". Hands- on, interactive demonstrations and exhibits from diverse fields of science, math, engineering, technology and education were featured during the day- long activities. SDSM& T exhibitors included Linda B. Allen, SDSGC; Dr. James Fox, Dept. of Geology and Geological Engineering; Melissa Boettcher and Scott Cooper; Geology students; and SDSGC Balloon Research Project/ graduate students Brian Herbst ( ME) and Kirk Opella ( ChemE). The goal of Space Day is to excite students about science, math, and technology through interaction with professionals and students in their fields, and opportunities to experience the fun of learning in an environment of high energy and professionalism. SD Space Day 1998 is on the drawing board now and will be held in Pierre in late April, 1998. By moving the host site across the State, more students and teachers have an opportunity to participate as a field trip without traveling extreme distances, according to Linda B. Allen, SDSGC outreach coordinator and general chair for SD Space Day. ++ 30++ ( f:\ programs\ dept\ univrel\ pressrele\ Space Day 97 fax/ stwd) |
