St. Joseph Street • Rapid City, SD 57701- 3995 Phone: ( 605) 394- 6082/ 2554 • Fax: ( 605) 394- 3388 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE ( April 22, 1997) 5200 SOUTH DAKOTA STUDENTS WILL JOIN NASA ASTRONAUT IN CELEBRATING SOUTH DAKOTA SPACE DAY ' 97 ON APRIL 24 5200 students from South Dakota elementary, middle and secondary high schools will be joining NASA astronaut Mike Mullane to celebrate the Third Annual South Dakota Space Day on April 24. This year's Space Day activities will be held from 8: 00 a. m. - 3: 00 p. m. at Augustana College and the USGS EROS Data Center. Keynote speaker for this year's event will be Mike Mullane, a NASA astronaut. Mullane will address three groups of school students at the following times and locations: 9: 00 - 10: 00 a. m. Elmen Center, Augustana College ( elementary school students) 10: 30 - 11: 30 a. m. Kresge Recital Hall, Augustana College ( high school students) 1: 30 - 2: 30 p. m. Elmen Center, Augustana College ( middle school students) In addition to Mullane's keynote addresses, a diverse set of programs, exhibits and displays will be presented at the two locations: Augustana College ( Elmen Center) and the USGS Eros Data Center near Garretson ( 10 miles north of I- 90 East, Exit 402). The goals of this challenging and exciting showcase of math, science, and technology are: 1) t o provide hands- on, interactive demonstrations to create excitement and stimulate interest in diverse fields of science, math, and engineering technology; 2) t o implement a network of local businesses and organizations who complement each other's interests; 3) t o create awareness in the Sioux Empire community of various resources available to support these fields. Two thousand students attended the first South Dakota Space Day at the South Dakota Discovery Center and Aquarium in Pierre in 1995. Nearly 2, 500 students participated in the second South Dakota Space Day held in Rapid City last year. The South Dakota Space Grant Consortium ( SDSGC), established in 1991, aims to improve research capabilities within South Dakota by enhancing coordination between higher education, government and industry. The SDSGC is funded by NASA with matching funds from consortium members. Space Grant members in South Dakota include the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology, South Dakota State University, Augustana College, and the U. S. Geological Survey's EROS Data Center.
