St. Joseph Street • Rapid City, SD 57701- 3995 Phone: ( 605) 394- 6082/ 2554 • Fax: ( 605) 394- 6177 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE ( November 3, 1997) SDSM& T SOLAR CAR TEAM TO VISIT BELLE FOURCHE 8TH GRADERS THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 6TH Students from the South Dakota School of Mines & Technology ( SDSM& T) Solar Motion Team will be bringing their solar- powered car to Belle Fourche on Thursday, November 6th, for Belle Fourche 8th graders to view and ask questions of the solar car team. Dakota Sun, the name of SDSM& T's solar- powered entry in Sunrayce ' 97, will be on display at the Belle Fourche Community Center, 1111 National Street, from 8: 30 - 9: 30 a. m. this Thursday, November 8th. Approximately 125 8th graders from the Belle Fourche Middle School are expected to view South Dakota Tech's solar car and discuss the design and use of solar- powered vehicles with Tech students. Ken Harding of Newell, a mechanical engineering major who competed in Sunrayce ‘ 97, will lead the student team members visiting Belle Fourche. Dakota Sun is one of only 35 solar- powered vehicles that completed this summer's 1, 240 mile race from Indianapolis to Colorado Springs. SDSM& T is the only university in an 11- state region ( Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, Oregon, South Dakota, Utah, Washington and Wyoming) that entered a vehicle in Sunrayce ' 97. The solar car is being brought to Belle Fourche as part of the SDSM& T Solar Motion Team's educational outreach activities to area schools.
