The Museum of Geology has provided paleontological services for many years to both parties through contracts and memorandum of agreements. Through these contracts and agreements the SDSM&T Museum of Geology has served as a contractor for Badlands National Park and as a fossil repository for the Oglala Sioux Tribe. The Park Service contracted with the Museum of Geology to conduct a project in August at Badlands National Park to map and stabilize the ancient fossils from the Titanothere bone bed area. Plans also included the preservation of eroding fossils. Due to land use issues that developed between the Tribe and the Park Service the project was cancelled. Dr. Gale Bishop, Director of the SDSM&T Museum of Geology, states, "The issue of the Titanothere Bone Bed Project is a land management issue between the Oglala Sioux Tribe and the National Park Service. The role of the Museum of Geology has been to serve as a contract agent for the National Park Service to provide scientific and technical expertise to preserve significant ancient fossils for both the Tribe and the Park Service. The Museum of Geology will do no excavations or removal of fossils until the land issues are clarified." SDSM&T values its relationships with the Tribe and the Park Service and remains hopeful that a mutually acceptable resolution can be reached between the Tribe and the Park Service. SDSM&T will not be involved in projects at the Titanothere site until a agreement can be reached between the Tribe and the Park Service. #30# |
