| Transcript | September 19, 2002 News From South Dakota School of Mines and Technology Tuesday Forum Series Begins New Season With a new school year comes a new season of Tuesday forums at the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology. The lunchtime forums are designed to give a venue for people to discuss important topics affecting the region, the world, and our lives. The forums begin at noon in the Surbeck Student Center Bump Lounge on campus. Lunch is available at 11:30 a.m. Tech invites the public to attend. United Campus Ministry, Lutheran Campus Ministry, and the Office of Multicultural Affairs sponsor the forums. The fall schedule: Tuesday, Sept. 10 – "Talking Circle, " the Rev. BLANK Ahn, DANA Ministries. Tuesday, Sept. 17 – "School Violence, " Rapid City Police Department Capt. Joann Conroy #30# Tech Career Fair Today More than 60 companies from around the country will be on the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology campus today to recruit Tech students for full-time employment and for internships. The Career Fair will be held from 9 a.m. to noon and from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. today, Tuesday, Sept. 17, in the Surbeck Student Center Ballroom. More than 92 percent of Tech students are either working in their career fields or pursuing advance degrees within six months of graduation. Tech grads average annual starting salaries of more than $47, 000 and work for some of the best-known companies in the country. Tech invites the media to attend. #30# Tech Invites Everyone To "Day Of Remembrance" The South Dakota School of Mines and Technology invites the public to campus Wednesday, Sept. 11, to take part in a Day of Remembrance. The event begins at 11 a.m. in the Surbeck Student Center Ballroom with a Time of Prayer and Remembrance. From 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., members of the university and Rapid City community can pray and meditate in the Surbeck Student Center Bump Lounge. Pastors from the United Campus Ministry and Lutheran Campus Ministry will be on hand during all events. #30# Recovery Presentation Sept. 11 Engineers played an important role in protecting the health and safety of workers and volunteers involved in the rescue and clean-up efforts at the World Trade Center site after the Sept. 11 attack. A South Dakota School of Mines and Technology professor will detail that role during a presentation at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 11, in the Surbeck Student Center Ballroom. Tech invites the public to attend and learn about the massive effort to make sure workers and volunteers remained safe. "People will hear stories and see photos they've never heard or seen before, " Industrial Engineering professor Dr. Carter Kerk said. "People will have a better understanding of what went into the recovery and clean-up operations." The event is part of South Dakota Tech's Day of Remembrance. #30# Western Water Tour Lands At Tech The Bureau of Reclamation will bring its Great Western Water Tour to the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology on Wednesday, Sept. 4, and Thursday, Sept. 5. The Bureau will open its History Trailer to the public from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. both days. The trailer's displays guide visitors through the history of the Bureau of Reclamation and how the Bureau has used projects to bring water to the western United States. It will be parked outside the Surbeck Student Center. The Bureau and Tech invite the public to attend. The Great Western Water Tour is part of the Bureau's 100th anniversary. #30# Event Passes On Tech Traditions When South Dakota School of Mines and Technology students climb M-Hill during M-Week, they sing songs that date back decades. They learn those songs as freshmen during an event that also has a long history. Freshmen will learn those songs and about all the Tech Traditions during an event at 7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 2, in the Quad on campus. Freshmen also will receive their green beanies. They will be expected to wear the hats until halftime of the Tech Homecoming football game Sept. 21. Tech invites the media to the event to see Tech's Traditions passed along to a new class of students. Earlier in the day, Tech's team of Orientation Leaders will host an ice breaker for all new Tech students. That event is scheduled for 10 a.m. in O'Harra Stadium. #30# Museum of Geology Switches to Winter Hours The Museum of Geology at the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology will be closed for the Labor Day holiday from Saturday, Aug. 31, through Monday, Sept. 2. The Museum will switch to its winter hours when it opens Tuesday, Sept. 3. The new hours will be: 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday; 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday; and 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday. The Museum of Geology is free and open to the public. #30# M-Week Begins Sept. 15 The South Dakota School of Mines and Technology's M-Week Homecoming celebration begins Sunday, Sept. 15. Activities begin with the Senior/Frosh Picnic at Dinosaur Hill. During the picnic, students will drape a blanket that features a giant "M" over one of the cement creatures. The most anticipated event of the week – the climb up "M-Hill" to whitewash the school letters and lay the Senior Plaque – occurs Friday, Sept. 20. M-Week has a 90-year history at South Dakota Tech. Students, staff and faculty hold the M-Week traditions close because the activities are the things we all have in common. It's a time for students to celebrate being at the university and to carry on traditions started decades ago. It's also a time when students create new traditions. Here's a schedule. Tech invites the media to all the events. Sunday, Sept. 15 Noon: Senior/Frosh Picnic, Dinosaur Hill Monday, Sept. 16 7 p.m.: Introduction of the Homecoming Candidates, Goodell Gymnasium Tuesday, Sept 17 Noon – 3 p.m.: Carnival, the Quad Wednesday, Sept. 18 11 a.m. – 3 p.m.: Quad Games/Homecoming Royalty Voting Thursday, Sept. 19 7 p.m.: Homecoming Royalty Coronation, Surbeck Center Ballroom. Following Coronation: Homecoming Bonfire, parking lot between Surbeck Center and the Library. Friday, Sept. 20 Noon: M-Day Picnic, M-Hill Climb, and whitewashing the "M, " M-Hill in downtown Rapid City. Saturday, Sept. 21 11 a.m.: Homecoming Parade, downtown Rapid City 1 p.m.: Homecoming football game vs. Huron University, O'Harra Stadium 9 p.m.: M-Day Dance, Memorial Park Band Shelter, downtown Rapid City Sunday, Sept. 22 Noon: Student/Alumni Golf Tournament, Executive Golf Course #30# President's Picnic Welcomes Students To Tech The newest students at the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology will have their first chance to talk with many of their future professors during the President's Picnic scheduled for 5 p.m. today, Tuesday, Sept. 3. The annual picnic, which brings new students, professors, and university officials together to meet and get to know each other, will be held in the Quad on Tech's campus. The picnic will follow the theme, "Welcome to the Jungle." Tech invites the media to attend. The event offers the opportunity for back-to-school stories or stories about young people entering a new phase of their lives. #30# |
