St. Joseph Street Rapid City, SD 57701-3995 Phone: (605) 394-6082/2554 Fax: (605) 394-6177 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE September 26, 2002 Contact: Steve Buchholz, Public Information Manager, 394-6082 JanSport Founder To Speak At Tech Between scaling Himalayan peaks and inventing the dome tent, Skip Yowell found time to co-found JanSport, a leader in outdoor gear. Yowell will visit the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 3, in the Surbeck Student Center Bump Lounge. He will present a slide show of his many adventures and talk about adventure travel. The event is free and open to the public. Yowell's appearance is sponsored by the Tech Bookstore. Yowell co-founded JanSport in 1967 with his cousins Murray and Jan. He invented the dome-style tent a few years later, the same year he summated Mount Ranier. He's also scaled the Himalayan peaks Dhaulagirisin, Everest, and was on the first American ascent of Mount Kanchenjunga. He's also climbed Rio Abisio in South America and Mount Kilimanjaro in Africa. Recently, his adventures have taken him and his camera to Africa to photograph wildlife. He also was instrumental in starting Big City Mountaineers, a non-profit organization that helps urban teen-agers experience the thrill of mountain climbing. The event is free and open to the public. The Bookstore will award prizes and giveaways. #30#
