St. Joseph Street Rapid City, SD 57701-3995 Phone: (605) 394-6082/2554 Fax: (605) 394-6177 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE July 25, 2002 Contact: Steve Buchholz, Public Information Manager, 394-6082 Camp Out With Earth And Space A few openings remain for middle school students in the Earth and Space camps offered at the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology. The South Dakota Space Grant Consortium and Tech's Museum of Geology sponsor the camps. The camps provide basic knowledge about Earth and space science in a fun and engaging way. The camps will provide more depth of content for those students who have specific interests. In Space Camp, students will use NASA resources and materials to study galaxies, our solar system, the origin of our universe, and how extra-solar planets are discovered. The class also will use large telescopes to investigate celestial objects. In addition, the class will take a trip to the Badlands Observatory in Quinn to see how a computer-controlled telescope is used to hunt for asteroids such as Asteroid South Dakota, discovered and named by the observatory director. In Earth Camp, students will learn about the processes and events that have shaped the Earth. The class will take field trips into the Black Hills to study geology and to collect rock and mineral specimens. Students also will learn how satellites are able to give us information about the Earth. The cost is $200 per student. Call Tom Campbell at 394-1973 to register. Space Camp: 5 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. Monday, July 29 through Thursday, Aug. 1 Earth Camp: 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 19 through Thursday, Aug. 22 #30#
