St. Joseph Street Rapid City, SD 57701- 3995 Phone: ( 605) 394- 6082/ 2554 Fax: ( 605) 394- 3388 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE ( March 17, 1997) SDSM& T HONORS HIGHMORE NATIVE AS OUTSTANDING TEACHER South Dakota School of Mines and Technology recently named Darwin ( Sam) Sampson as recipient of SDSM& T's Outstanding Teacher Award. University President Richard J. Gowen presented Sampson with the award during SDSM& T's Forty- sixth Annual Honors Convocation on March 13, 1997. Sampson, a 1961 graduate of Highmore High School, is the son of Alice and Wayne Sampson of Highmore. He currently is a teacher at Hill City High School. Sampson graduated from Northern State College in Aberdeen in 1965 with a B. S. degree in education with emphasis in science and math. A teacher for the past thirty- one years, Sampson has taught at Kennebec, Sturgis, West Bend, Iowa; Auckland, New Zealand; and at Hill City since 1978. He received a M. A. degree in math and physics from University of South Dakota in 1970 Sampson was instrumental in setting up a computer programming class for students in Hill City in 1978 using SDSM& T's main frame computer. This course was one of the first computer classes for high schools in the area. Sam currently teaches algebra II, chemistry, physics, senior math, and pre- calculus at Hill City High School. Jeffrey Robbins, a SDSM& T freshman computer engineering major, nominated Sampson for his selfless acts as an educator. Bruce Jordan, principal of Hill City High School, wrote that " Sam challenges and teaches to the upper level of his students' abilities in a fun and interesting way. Students are eager to go to his classes… He is one who really makes a difference."
