SDSM& T President Richard J. Gowen presented Sampson with the award during SDSM& T's Forty- sixth Annual Honors Convocation on March 13, 1997. Cary graduated from the University of Kansas with a bachelor's degree in physics education and later received his M. A. degree in physics from the University of Missouri, Kansas City. He has been selected Teacher of the Year by graduating Chadron high school students four times since 1988. Cary also has served as a teaching assistant for the High School Teachers Engineering Program ( HISTEP) at the University of Wyoming and was a State of Wyoming finalist for the Christa McCauliffe Award in 1987. In nominating him for the award, Amy Landreth, a sophomore civil engineering major, stated, " Mr. Cary brought enthusiasm into his classroom. He challenged everyone to work hard and as always encouraging us that we could go very far in life." Stephen Sexton, Superintendent of Chadron Schools, described Cary as being " well grounded in current research and educational thought. He has the rare talent of being able to bring these understandings together and place them in action in practical settings which produce results." -- 30— ( f:\ programs\ dept\ univrel\ pressrele\ 03- 97\ Outstanding Teacher.
