St. Joseph Street • Rapid City, SD 57701-3995 Phone: (605) 394-6082/2554 • Fax: (605) 394-6177 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE March 22, 2002 Contact: Steve Buchholz, 394-6082 Stevens High School Sweeps Science Fair Awards Stevens High School students took home the top four awards from the 47th High Plains Regional Science and Engineering Fair held Friday at the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology. Ashley Nord walked away with the top prize, the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair trophy. Her project was called "The Size and Distance of the Andromeda Galaxy." Nord will travel to Louisville in May for the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair, where she will face the world's best science fair projects. Traveling with her will be Stevens High School student Blake Campbell, who won the second place award Friday with his project, "The Way of the Warrior: Effects of Traditional Martial Arts Training on Aggressiveness." Judges also named two alternates for the International Science Fair. They will travel if Nord or Campbell cannot make the trip. Stevens student Jessica Olson was named first alternate with her project, "Alcohol Fuel." Stevens student Carl Nelson was named second alternate with his project, "The Effect of Time and Misinformation on Memory." More than 400 sixth- through 12th-graders brought their science and engineering projects to South Dakota Tech for Friday's event. The fair featured 350 entries from students from across South Dakota. Students in sixth through eighth grades competed in one of the following categories: biological, physical and team. Students in ninth through 12th grades competed in one of these divisions: medicine and health, biology, chemistry/physics/mathematics, engineering/earth and space sciences and behavioral and social sciences. #30# |
