St. Joseph Street • Rapid City, SD 57701- 3995 Phone: ( 605) 394- 6082/ 2554 • Fax: ( 605) 394- 6177 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: ( June 30, 1997) SAN RAMON TEACHER DIGS FOR DINOSAUR FOSSILS WITH SOUTH DAKOTA PALEONTOLOGISTS Jennifer Milano, an elementary school teacher from San Ramon, California, is spending part of her summer digging for dinosaur fossils with paleontologists from the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology ( SDSM& T) in Rapid City, South Dakota. Milano is receiving hands- on, in- the- field fossil digging experience at an important paleontological site of Late Cretaceous dinosaurs and other vertebrates from eastern Wyoming and southwest of the Black Hills. This is Milano's fifth summer of participating in field digs with SDSM& T paleontologists. Directed by Dr. James Martin, Curator of Vertebrate Paleontology for the SDSM& T Museum of Geology, the excavation is helping to gather important data for the interval prior to the great dinosaur extinction event. The field dig is occurring in an area where Triceratops, Tyrannosaurus, Ankylosaurus, and numerous duck- billed dinosaurs have previously been recovered. The SDSM& T Museum of Geology is a research and teaching museum with extensive exhibits of minerals and fossil collections. Its outstanding collection of fossils includes skeletons of dinosaurs, giant reptiles and fish from the Jurassic, Late Cretaceous and other geological ages. SDSM& T's field paleontology program attracts students, teachers and others from across the nation each summer. The public can participate on a limited, space- available basis.
