St. Joseph Street Rapid City, SD 57701-3995 Phone: (605) 394-6082/2554 Fax: (605) 394-6177 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE April 12, 2002 Contact: Steve Buchholz, Public Information Manager, 394-6082 Nurse Without Borders To Speak At Tech Mary Lightfine, a nurse who has spent the past 10 years working in war-torn countries such as Afghanistan, Somalia, South Sudan and Pakistan, will speak at the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology on Wednesday, April 17. The public is invited to her two lectures, scheduled for 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. in the Surbeck Student Center Ballroom. Lightfine now works as a lecturer for Nurses Without Borders. She also has traveled the globe for the Novel Peace Prize winning organization, Doctors Without Borders. She served as the online correspondent for ABC International News in Nicaragua while aiding in the relief efforts for victims of Hurricane Mitch, and worked in Kosovo refugee camps. In her 4 p.m. lecture, Lightfine will speak about the medical effects of war, disaster, and disease have had on people on several continents, as well as the geopolitical, historical and cultural aspects of societies different from our own. She will describe several diseases, including some endemic and epidemic illnesses that strike populations affected by war, civil conflict and displacement. During the 7 p.m. lecture, Lightfine will describe the effects of war, disaster and disease on the cultures and welfare of populations on several continents. Admission is $2 per lecture. Purchase tickets at the door the day of the event. NOTE: South Dakota Tech will host a press conference for Mary Lightfine at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 17, in Surbeck Student Center Bump Lounge East.
