Sandy Skoglund's " Here and Now" is an installation, an exhibit that is more environment that piece of art. " The audience becomes part of the artwork, " Apex Gallery director Deborah Mitchell said. " It's not a passive experience like viewing a sculpture or a painting." To create " Here and Now, " students in Tech's Art History 320 class will staple dozens of reams of crumpled gamma green paper to the gallery's walls, painted the same color as the paper. Tech students will paint various items that same color and place them in the exhibit to create an environment that startles your senses. Gerry Renner's fourth- grade class at Wilson Elementary School and community artists under Skoglund's instruction also will help install the exhibit. Skoglund is an internationally renowned artist who has created installations of " fabricated reality" for more than 20 years. She is perhaps best known for " Revenge of the Goldfish" and " Radioactive Cats." See her work at www. sandyskoglund. com. She will deliver a public lecture at 7 p. m. Thursday, March 28, at the Apex Gallery, room 204E in Tech's Classroom Building. She will attend an opening reception from 5 p. m. to 7 p. m. Friday, March 29, at the gallery. Visit the gallery and " Here and Now" from 10 a. m. to 5 p. m. Monday through Friday, - more- - page 2- from 10 a. m. to 5 p. m. Saturday, and from 1 p. m. to 5 p. m. Sunday. " Here and Now" runs through May 17. This project is supported by grants from the Elizabeth Firestone Graham Foundation and the Adelstein Foundation, and a contribution from State Publishing in Pierre. The Apex Gallery invites the media to see the installation in progress at noon Monday, March 25, and at noon Wednesday, March 27. # 30# |
