| Transcript | FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE February 20, 2002 Contact: Eric Abrahamson 605/ 484- 3820 South Dakota Scholastic Chess Championship Set for Rapid City, Saturday, March 9 With a bow to the growing popularity of school chess programs West River, the South Dakota Chess Association will hold its state scholastic championships in Rapid City. This will be the first time that the state championship has been held in Rapid City since the annual tournament began in1986. The South Dakota School of Mines and Technology will cohost the event which will take place on Saturday, March 9. Nearly 200 students representing dozens of public, private and home schools are expected to take part in the tournament. The Sioux Falls Home School Team, which finished in the top ten at the national championships last spring, has been playing very well. The team recently placed second at a major national tournament held in Dallas. The Riggs High School team from Pierre is expected to be a strong contender in the high school division. They will be given a run for their money by Rapid City Stevens. The tournament is open to students – from novice to expert – in grades K- 12. On- site registration begins at 7: 30 a. m. with the first round of play scheduled for 9: 00 a. m. All students will play five games. No one will be eliminated. Trophies will be awarded to the top five finishers in four grade divisions: primary ( K- 3), elementary ( K- 6), middle school ( K- 9), and high school ( K- 12); and to the top three teams in each division. Registration is $ 7 in advance ( due by March 2) or $ 12 on the day of the event, plus U. S. Chess Federation membership. The tournament is sanctioned by the U. S. Chess Federation. Baseball in the spring. Football in the fall. Chess all year round. This fall, the Sioux Falls home- schooler brought all his competitive zeal to the forefront when he won five of six matches and finished third in the nation among seventh graders at a National Championship held in Dallas. On March 8, Gerdes will play five professors from the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology in a simultaneous match at 6: 00 p. m. at Borders Books & Music on Haines Avenue. The event will be staged to help promote the South Dakota Scholastic Chess Championships scheduled to take place at the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology the following day. Isaac Gerdes, 13, is a seventh grade home- educated student from the Sioux Falls area. He has been playing competitive chess for the last four years. During that time, he has earned three state titles and in 2001 finished third place in the high school section as a sixth grade student. He also has three Sioux Falls city scholastic titles. Isaac and his Sioux Falls Home School teammates recently finished second in the Nation during the K- 12 National Tournament held in Dallas, Texas. During that tournament, Isaac won five out of six games to finish tied for third in the nation among seventh grade students. Chess is only one of Isaac's many interests. In addition to baseball and football, he enjoys skiing, skating, golf and swimming. He has been very active in promoting chess by presenting sessions in schools and chess clubs.
