KENNETH HOFFMAN TO BE KEYNOTE SPEAKER AT NATIONAL COUNCIL OF SPACE GRANT DIRECTORS ANNUAL CONFERENCE IN RAPID CITY Dr. Kenneth Hoffman, President, National Alliance of State Mathematics and Science Coalitions, will be the keynote speaker at the National Council of Space Grant Directors Annual Conference being held October 8- 9 at the Alex Johnson Hotel in Rapid City. The conference is being hosted by the South Dakota Space Grant Consortium ( SDSGC) and coordinated by the SDSGC office at the South Dakota School of Mines & Technology. A key theme of the1997 conference is K- 12 education outreach. Special events are planned, including a reception at " The Journey" on Wednesday evening from 6: 00- 8: 00 p. m. Dallas Chief Eagle, a Lakota hoop dancer of international reputation, will perform from 6: 00 - 6: 30 p. m. during the reception Wednesday evening. Space Grant directors and their education program officers from all 52 consortia, NASA Space Grant Fellows and representatives of NASA's Education Division and various NASA Centers will attend. NASA officials attending the conference include Frank Owens, Director, Education Division; Julius Dasch, Program Manager, NASA Space Grant/ EPSCoR; Susan Stewart, CMIS System Administrator; and Malcom Phelps, Assistant Director for Education Programs. Dr. Hoffman, Professor Emeritus at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology ( MIT), will give his keynote address, entitled " National Standards and Beyond, " at the noon luncheon on Wednesday, October 8. Dr. Hoffman is a mathematician, educator, author, and administrator who is widely recognized as a national leader in mathematics, science and engineering education. In March 1994 Hoffman completed a 13- year affiliation with the National Academy of Sciences/ National Research Council. During his 40- year career at MIT, he chaired major institutional committees, including relations between MIT and the intelligence agencies of the U. S. government. He is the author of numerous publications on education policy and his mathematical specialty, function algebras. Dr. Hoffman has received several awards, including the American Mathematical Society's first Distinguished Public Service Award. He currently works out of offices in Bethesda, Maryland, where he operates The MSTE Connection, a nationwide network -- more-- - 2- of leaders in standards- based systemic reform of math, science and technology education in the nation's schools. Session topics to be covered during the conference include Space Grant Teacher Professional Development Programs, NASA/ Space Grant Educational Programs, NASA Centers and Space Grant as Partners in K- 12 Programs, and Strategic Enterprise Working Groups, Human Exploration and Development of Space, Mission to Planet Earth, NASA Grants Management Process Improvement, Space Science Working Group, Aeronautics Working Group, Student Missions Working Group, Citizen Explorer, and Science Workshops for Journalists.
