The Black Hills Chapter of the National Society of Professional Engineers and the engineers and scientists at the South Dakota School of Mines & Technology have joined together to show how " engineers make a world of difference." The purpose of National Engineers Week is to increase awareness and appreciation of this profession. Since it was founded by the NSPE in 1951, Engineers Week has enjoyed the support of thousands of engineers, engineering students, teachers, and leaders in government and business. The following is a calendar of events. Friday, February 14 2: 15 pm C/ M Room 210 Civil & Environmental Engineering Department BRIDGE STRENGTH TESTING Testing the efficiency of bridges built by junior and senior high school student using 8- 1/ 2" x 11" cardboard. Cash prizes will be awarded for top three contestants. For more information, call 394- 2439. Saturday, February 15 10: 00 am Surbeck Center Ballroom KIDS' BLOCK CONTEST Open to grades 1- 6 to build engineering projects with interlocking blocks. Sponsored by National Association of Women in Construction, Black Hills Chapter. Judged by NAWIC, local contractors and SDSM& T students. Call Edna Steinberg to register, 399- 6209. BUFFET LUNCHEON 12: 00 PM PANEL DISCUSSION " Law Suite Abuse Runs Amuck: A Brief Discussion of Professional tort Reform." panel discussion presented by the Black Hills Chapter, South Dakota Engineering Society in conjunction with SDSM& T United Campus Ministry with Mr. Gary Hamilton as Moderator. Panelists will include professionals from the Black Hills/ West River area. 2: 00 pm FORUM - " Humans, Society, and Machines" Dr. George Bugliarello, chancellor and former president of Polytechnic University, will discuss changes in today's society because of the influence of machines. Dr. Bugliarello is an engineer and educator whose background ranges from biomedical engineering to fluid mechanics, computer languages and sociotechnology. He holds an engineering degree from MIT and is former president and member of Sigma Xi. ( Sigma Xi and SDSM& T Engineer's Week are sponsoring this forum.) Wednesday, February 19 4: 00 pm - 6: 00 pm Surbeck Center Ballroom ANYTHING GOES CONTEST Fun contest for teams of SDSM& T students. Thursday, February 20 11: 00 am - 12: 00 noon Surbeck Center Ballroom RECOGNITION OF OUTSTANDING RECENT GRADUATES Selected recent graduates of SDSM& T will receive awards based on their outstanding professional performance. PROCLAMATION OF ENGINEERS WEEK Proclamation by Mayor Ed McLaughlin. THE ORDER OF THE ENGINEER INITIATION The " Order" fosters a spirit of pride and responsibility in the profession of engineering. The initiates will be presented a certificate and the traditional stainless steel ring. 12: 00 - 1: 00 pm LUNCH $ 20.00 includes initiation and the ring for initiates ($ 7.50 for lunch only). Guided tours start and end at Surbeck Center.
