The award honors outstanding seniors and graduate students majoring in chemistry, chemical engineering or biochemistry. Melissa recently graduated from the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology with a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry. She was nominated for the award by her SDSM& T professors for her ability, character, scholastic achievement and potential advancement in the chemical profession. As a 1997 Student Awardee, Melissa will receive a free one- year membership in the American Institute of Chemists ( AIC), a subscription to The Chemist, AIC's bimonthly publication for the chemical profession, and a listing in the 1997- 1998 Professional Directory. The AIC is a national, nonprofit organization which promotes the relevance of the chemical profession to society.
