Mini- Indy is an annual intercollegiate competition organized by the Society of Automotive Engineers ( SAE) with major corporate sponsorship by Chrysler, Ford and General Motors. 93 teams from universities throughout the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico are registered to compete in this year's Mini- Indy event. Students design, fabricate and compete with small formula style race cars. The focus of Mini- Indy is not simply on who can build the fastest car but rather on the use of engineering skills, financial know- how, and creativity. Given certain car frame and engine restrictions, the students' knowledge, creativity and imagination are tested. Vehicles are judged in three categories: 1) static inspection and engineering design; 2) solo performance trials; and 3) high performance track endurance. Student members of the SDSM& T Hardrocker Racing Team are as follows: Travis Gorsuch, Canistota; Chad Magstadt, Tripp; Brian Bickett, Upton, WY; Jamey Backus, Wentworth; Jose Iguaz, Spain; Scott Moos, Rapid City; Ed Seaver, Rapid City; Brad Stewart, Rapid City; Landon Hamby, Parker, CO; Roy Reiss, Java; Ben Short, Sturgis; Ryan Howard, Rapid City; Tory Snetsinger, Sioux Falls; and Tony Merkel, Yankton. Faculty advisor for the SDSM& T Mini- Indy team is Dr. Dan Dolan, Professor of Mechanical Engineering. This is the second year that SDSM& T will be entering a car in the Mini- Indy competition. The team tested their Mini- Indy vehicle this past weekend by competing in the Black Hills Sports Car Club's Autocross event in Rapid City. ++ 30++ ( f:\ programs\ dept\ univrel\ pressrele\ MiniIndy fax/ stwd) |
