The proclamation recognizes the role of South Dakota's public higher education system in opening doors for South Dakotans through teaching, research and service. The proclamation further states that investment in public higher education provides opportunities for individual economic security; personal growth; and leadership development in government, business, education and the arts. " Higher Education Week offers an opportunity to recognize the quality and the value of the education that our students receive at South Dakota Tech, " said Dr. Richard J. Gowen, President of SDSM& T. " We will continue to build on those traditions of excellence to make sure that our graduates are prepared to succeed in business and industry in the 21st century." Founded in 1885, the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology ( SDSM& T) has been an integral part of the Rapid City community for more than a century. The Rapid City Area Chamber of Commerce recognized the university earlier this fall by presenting SDSM& T with the Chamber's 1997 Granite Award in recognition of Tech's significant educational, economic and cultural contributions to the Rapid City community. South Dakota Tech currently has over 2, 200 students and approximately 400 faculty and staff. Starting salaries for 1996- 97 Tech graduates range from $ 33, 500 for science to $ 37, 000 for engineering majors. Governor William J. Janklow has also proclaimed November 10- 14 as " Higher Education Week" in South Dakota. ++ 30++ ( f:\ programs\ dept\ univrel\ pressrele\ 1197\ Higher Ed Week fax/ local) |
