| Transcript | September 28, 2001 M- Hill History The " M" and accompanying " S" and " D" were built by hand in 1912 on Cowboy Hill by students and faculty of what was then called the South Dakota School of Mines. Workers removed rock and dirt and replaced it with stones that were later whitewashed to make it visible from 12 miles away. Students began replacing the stones with concrete in 1922 and established the M- Day homecoming tradition of setting the senior plaque. That tradition continues today. M- Week 2002 wouldn't be complete without Tech's other traditions. Students, faculty and staff attended the M- Day Picnic at the base of M- Hill Friday and after the hill trek, washed off the paint with mud during mud volleyball matches played at the Omaha Street courts. Thursday night, students built and burned the annual bonfire and named their homecoming royalty. They chose Abe Kean of Pierre as King and Katie Zeller of Pierre as Queen. Tech will play its Homecoming football game at 1 p. m. Saturday at O'Harra Stadium. |
