| Transcript | May 31, 2001 Aldrich received his BS ChE ( 1962) from SDSM& T and was a Distinguished Military Grad- uate. He returned for an MS ChE ( 1968) and was elected to Sigma Xi. His professional career has spanned 36 years with Dow Corning Corporation, and he served two years in the US Army. Professional Career: As a chemical engineer, he worked in research and development, pilot plant operations, process engineering, and technical service with increasing responsibility. He led one of the company's first major commercialization programs, and managed product development, metallurgy, and analytical sciences. His staff assignments were in human resources, product line management, and process technology. After an assignment to assess corporate laboratory needs, Doug built a major R& D center in 1990. He evolved this into managing a half million sq ft of all US technical facilities, before expanding his role globally. He completed lab projects in Germany, Brazil, Singapore and Belgium, with one underway in China. He also oversees lab safety worldwide and is the company's chemical hygiene officer. Organizational Involvement: Doug was a member of Michigan's AIChE, led its career guidance work, and served on its board. He joined the International Facility Management Association, co- founded its special- interest council for laboratory managers, and was its president for three years. Doug progressed through the association board and executive committee, and in 1999, became the chairman of its 18, 000 members. He is on the advisory board of a college facility program, and sits on the board of directors of an architectural firm. Community Participation: He has been active in his church ( executive board, stewardship, music, speaker), played French horn in concert band, and acted in a play and a musical. Doug was a loaned executive and com- pany co- chair for United Way, and coached many teams that his kids were on. He developed a technical writing course, still offered after 25 years, for a community college. SDSM& T Involvement: Doug completed 30 years of interviewing for Dow Corning, with a record of 1, 041 inter- views and 83 hires; his company is the fourth highest recruiter of Tech grads. He proposed a new technical communications curriculum, which is still offered, was on the first advisory board for the ChE department, and now serves on the institution's academic advisory board. He has spoken to many classes and campus organizations about communications, industry and leadership, and been a speaker for student conferences and celebrations. Doug sponsored a major Dow Corning grant to the Chem- ChE department, and established student awards for excellence in English. Honors and Recognition: Doug has written several articles on building issues, and was featured on the covers of two facility magazines. He also co- authored an article on recruiting that sold 12, 000 reprints. He became a Certified Facility Manager, which only 8% of IFMA's members attain, was elected to Theta Tau's Alumni Hall of Fame, and inducted into the Order of the Engineer. He has three corporate awards for recruiting, and SDSM& T recognized his initial 15 years with its first Placement department plaque. At his 30- year milestone, Doug was presented the " Grubby" award, the first for a non- faculty person. In 1998, he received one of the first four Distinguished Alumni Awards from SDSM& T, and in May, 2000 was awarded an Honorary Doctorate from his alma mater. Personal: His wife Karolyn is a singer and voice teacher, and has two other businesses. They have four children and ( almost) seven grandchildren. Besides family time, their favorite hobbies are travel, music, reading, entertaining, wallpapering and fine cuisine. |
