St. Joseph Street • Rapid City, SD 57701- 3995 Phone: ( 605) 394- 6082/ 2554 • Fax: ( 605) 394- 6177 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE ( May 21, 1997) CHEYENNE STUDENT IS MEMBER OF SDSM& T " MINI- INDY" TEAM / TECH HAS FASTEST CARBURETED CAR IN ENDURANCE- ECONOMY EVENT Ryan Howard of Cheyenne competed with his fellow SDSM& T " Mini- Indy" team members in the recent Formula SAE, or " Mini- Indy", competition in Michigan. The international event was held May 14- 18 in the the Pontiac Silverdome in Michigan. The SDSM& T Hardrocker Racing team members had the fastest carbureted car in the endurance- economy portion of the Mini- Indy competition. Howard was a recent candidate for a B. S. degree in Industrial Engineering from the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology. He is the son of Jean Howard of Cheyenne and Bradford Howard of Laramie. South Dakota Tech's team placed 24th overall out of 96 entries and was one of only 21 teams to be awarded a " Distinguished Achievement" Certificate for earning points in every competition event. Cornell University won the Formula SAE title, upending the University of Texas at Arlington, which had won the event the past two years. Entering the competition for only the second year, SDSM& T finished ahead of many larger universities with substantially bigger Mini- Indy budgets and more years of experience in the 17- year- old competition. Mini- Indy is an annual intercollegiate competition organized by the Society of Automotive Engineers ( SAE) with major corporate sponsorship by Chrysler, Ford and General Motors. Teams from 96 universities throughout the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom were registered to compete in this year's Mini- Indy event. Engineering students conceive, design, fabricate and compete with small formula- style racing cars. The objectives of the competition are primarily to give students a meaningful project experience in their engineering program, to prepare engineers for the auto industry, and to bring new ideas on safety, economy and performance into automobiles. The focus is not simply on who can build the fastest car but rather on the use of engineering skills, financial know- how, and creativity based on certain car frame and engine specifications. The teams are scored in the following categories: 1) cost; 2) presentation; 3) design; 4) acceleration; 5) skid pad; 6) autocross; and 7) endurance- economy. The endurance- economy competition is the key event and is the most heavily weighted category for scoring.
