Record Linton Sehn is Oustanding Teacher of the Year Dr. Allen Sehn, who grew upon his family farm at Linton, credits many individuals for spurring his interest in civil engineering and teaching and for being role models as educators and researchers. Sehn credits his parents, Leo and Valeria Sehn of Linton, for recognizing the importance of education and for the strong support that they provided to him and his siblings. Of the six children, one is a successful owner operator of the family farm, five earned bachelor's degrees, two earned master's degrees and Allen earned a Ph.D. degree. It was through the suggestion of Dr. Iyer. Professor of Civil Engineering at South Dakota School of Mines and Technology (SDSMT) where Sehn earned his bachelor's and masters degrees, that Sehn first be came interested in a career in academia. Regarding his success as a teacher, Allen credits the influence of the many excellent educators that he had the opportunity to learn from at SDSMT and at Virginia Tech. While at Virginia Tech, where Sehn earned his Ph.D. in Civil Engineering, he observed the teaching styles of Professors G. Wayne Clough, J. Mike Duncan and Thomas L. Brandon. Each of them has received several awards for their teaching effectiveness and it is their methods and styles that Schn has tried to emulate in developing his own teaching methods. Dr. Sehn also has an impressive record of bringing research funds to The University of Akron. In addition to his teaching accomplishments, Sehn has received more than $630, 000 in research funding during the past seven years. The effort and time related to research have made it challenging at times to find the correct balance between research and attention to students and their needs. The solution often involves spending long days at the university and working on weekends. The most rewarding part of teaching for Allen is witnessing the excitement students build as they learn. Allen particularly enjoys working with students in the labs, an environment where question and answer, give-and- take is open—a place where true learning flourishes. To encourage his students to be come involved in research and to consider graduate study, Allen regularly provides part-time employment opportunities for several undergraduate students to work with him on research projects. This allows them to experience what research is like and helps them in deciding if they want to continue their education with graduate study. He invites all students interested in civil engineering to contact him for information and any questions they may have. He will be happy to help them in any way he can. His passion for his chosen field is concentrated in the challenging areas of civil engineering, geotechnical engineering and technical design where each project is started completely in the dark, and the challenge is to identify engineering properties, characterize materials, and influence design. Sehn's professional affiliation include the American Society of Civil Engineers, the International Society for Soil Mechanics and Foundation Engineering, the American Society for Testing and Materials, Sigma Xi and the American Concrete Institute. He has been appointed to the Committee on Subsurface Soil-Structure Interaction and the Committee on Soil and Rock Instrumentation of the National Research Council, and he is a member of the executive committee of the Ohio Infrastructure Institute.
