St. Joseph Street • Rapid City, SD 57701- 3995 Phone: ( 605) 394- 6082/ 2554 • Fax: ( 605) 394- 3388 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE ( May 12, 1997) MEDIA TIP SHEET: SDSM& T EVENTS FOR WEEK OF MAY 12- 17, 1997 Following is a summary of activities and events taking place on the South Dakota School Mines and Technology campus during the week of May 12- 17, 1997: Tuesday, May 13: SDSM& T's SKILL Community Outreach Forum: " The Challenge of Race/ A Presentation about Stereotyping, Prejudice and Racism" 10: 45 - 11: 30 a. m., Central High School Theater Speaker will be Clark Richardson. This weekly forum is part of the community outreach activities of Tech's SKILL ( Scientific Knowledge for Indian Learning and Leadership) program. Sponsored by Communities in Schools, the forum's purpose is to promote American Indian students within the community and among their peers. Door prizes given at forum are provided by Pizza Hut, Rushmore 7 Theater, and Musicland. For more information, contact Philip Huebner, SKILL Director, at 394- 1828. 1997 Water Festival ( over 1000 area fourth- graders attending) 8: 30 a. m. - 2: 00 p. m. Quiz Bowl will be held in Rooms 204E & 204W in Didier Education Center ( Classroom Building). Water Festival is an environmental education program directed to fourth graders. 46 fourth- grade classes from 15 area schools will participate in a quiz bowl and a variety of educational, hands- on activities. [** Editor's note: Good visual/ photographic opportunities include: -- Stream Gauging on Rapid Creek ( presented by USGS) – will take place just north of the Tech campus at the Steele Street Bridge. -- Aquatic Insects/ Rapid Creek ( presented by Dakota Angler & Outfitter)— north of the Tech campus at the Steele Street Bridge -- Water Filtration and Water Chemistry – Rooms 103/ 106, Civil Mechanical Building ( south of Classroom Bldg)] May 14- 18: Mini- Indy Competition , Pontiac Silverdome, Michigan SDSM& T's team will be competing in Mini- Indy, which is an annual intercollegiate competition organized by the Society of Automotive Engineers ( SAE) with major corporate sponsorship by Chrysler, Ford and General Motors. 93 teams from universities throughout the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico are registered to compete in this year's Mini- Indy event.
