St. Joseph Street • Rapid City, SD 57701- 3995 Phone: ( 605) 394- 6082/ 2554 • Fax: ( 605) 394- 3388 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE ( APRIL 21, 1997) MEDIA TIP SHEET: SDSM& T EVENTS FOR " EARTH DAY" AND WEEK OF APRIL 21- 26, 1997 Following is a summary of activities and events taking place on the South Dakota School Mines and Technology campus on " Earth Day", April 22, and during the week of April 21- 26, 1997: " Earth Day" Tues, Apr 22: Environmental Affairs Forum 8: 00 a. m. - 5: 00 p. m., Surbeck Center Ballroom The forum offers sessions on Solid Waste, Air Quality and Water Quality issues. Practitioners, regulators, and local and state government administrators will discuss local and regional impacts of environmental legislation on different aspects of society. LUNCHEON SPEAKER: Dennis Hood, Physical Scientist from the EROS Data Center, will discuss the EROS Data Center's role in the " Mission to Planet Earth" Program. United Campus Ministry Forum: " The Mormon Church" 12: 00 noon - 1: 00 p. m., Bump Lounge, Surbeck Center Lunch available at 11: 30 a. m. Public Unveiling of Tech's New Solar Car, " Dakota Sun" 4: 00 p. m., Arch Area ( directly south of Devereaux Library) " Dakota Sun" is SDSM& T's entry in Sunrayce ' 97, an intercollegiate competition of solar- powered cars open exclusively to colleges and universities in North America. Sunrayce ' 97 will be held June 19- 28 and will run from Indianapolis to Colorado Springs. Tech's Solar Motion team will leave the day after the unveiling of their solar car for the Sunrayce ' 97 Qualifying Competition, which is being held this weekend in Mesa, AZ. Wednesday, April 23: Robert Hastings Lecture: " UFOs: The Hidden History" 7: 00 p. m., Surbeck Center Ballroom Hastings, an independent UFO researcher and lecturer, will present a 90- minute lecture and slide show on UFOs based on previously classified government documents that were obtained through the Freedom of Information Act. At the conclusion of the program, Mr. Hastings will provide information that will allow members of the audience to access up to 600 pages of these now- released documents. Sponsored by Tech's TONITE organization, the lecture is open to the public. Admission is $ 3 ( free for Tech students, faculty, and staff.) Thursday, April 24: 1st Annual Engineering Design Fair 8: 30 a. m. - 12: 30 p. m., Surbeck Center Ballroom The event will showcase the Capstone Design Projects of Mechanical Engineering and Chemical Engineering students. Many of the projects on display, including an animal inoculation gun and four vehicle projects, have external sponsorship from local businesses and government agencies, . Fri- Sun, April 25- 27: Qualifying Competition for Sunrayce ' 97 General Motors Proving Grounds, Mesa, AZ Tech's Solar Motion team will enter " Dakota Sun" in the Qualifying Competition. With over 60 teams registered for Sunrayce ' 97, teams must prove the safety and reliability of their solar car on a qualifying competition before being allowed to compete in the solar car race across America, which will be held June 19- 28 and will run from Indianapolis to Colorado Springs. Saturday, April 26: 47th Annual West River Math Contest ( Rescheduled from April 5th due to winter storm that weekend.) 9: 30 a. m., Opening session, Surbeck Center Ballroom 1: 00 p. m., Awards ceremony, Room 252, Electrical Engineering/ Physics Building. Saturday, April 26: SDSM& T Undergraduate Research Symposium ‘ 97 9: 00 a. m. - 2: 30 p. m., Classroom Building ( CB) 9: 15 - 11: 00 a. m., Oral Presentations ( CB 204E) 11: 00 a. m. - 1: 30 p. m., Poster Viewing/ Judging ( CB 206) 1: 30 p. m., Featured Speaker: Professor James O'Brien, Southwest Missouri State University, " Famous Mad Hatters, " ( CB 204E) 2: 15 p. m., Awards Ceremony ( CB 204E) Undergraduate students from South Dakota's universities will give oral and poster presentations on their latest research in the fields of Engineering, Science and Social Sciences. Cash awards will be given to the top presenters in each category and to the best overall presenter. Saturday, April 26: Concert Choir, Master Chorale and the Tech Alumni Choir Annual Spring Concert: " Music of the Masters" 8: 00 p. m., First Congregational Church, 1200 Clark Street Admission: Free will offering will be taken during the concert with proceeds going to the SDSM& T Music Scholarship Fund. Concert conductor will be Dr. Susan Reid, Director of SDSM& T Choral Activities. 35 Tech alumni are returning to perform in the Tech Alumni Choir, which is directed by Dr. James Feiszli, Director of SDSM& T Music Activities and Chair of the Humanities Dept. Saturday, April 26: " Flute and Piano Recital" by Gail Samuels and Katie Chamberlain 7: 30 p. m., Our Lady of Perpetual Help Cathedral Admission: $ 5 Sponsored by Hills Material Company and the Chamber Music Society, the concert features SDSM& T metallurgical engineering student Gail Samuels as flutist and Katie Chamberlain as pianist. Prior to attending Tech, Gail Samuels was principal flutist for the Air Force Band at Offutt AFB, Omaha.
